Technically, Toyota could deny powertrain issues I suppose. But the tune has been undetectable, and can always be reflashed to stock before service if you’re nervous about it.

Also, Mat implied that a more simplified interface / method / package of sorts is on the way. I think many folks want that. As close to plug and play as possible.

Anybody run into and resolve an “internal server error” when you try to download bin files for an unlocked Ecu in VFt?

And does that Bin file for the unlocked ECU include the stock tune? I forgot to grab that from FM before.

I'm guessing here ..... but, Mat may have taken down the server, temp. probably.

You can find the stock tune in your OVTune / vF installation folder. I believe it comes with the tune pack.

If you need it sooner ..... post up your ECU ID & some one will probably post it for you.

Ok, super newb question here but I've only begun to consider tuning. 2017 TRD OR AT, in the process of putting lift and tires on now, so we will see how it runs after. But if I want a tune where should I start? With one of the TSB updates?

And if I do decide to go OV tune, how do I actually do that? Do I have to buy the VF tuner kit for 300$? And then pay more money to actually tune it? And then if I don't like the tune pay more money to try another or go back to normal? It seems like a lot to me, like I understand that it's a complicated thing and they work hard to make their product, but it really blows my mind that after paying 300 dollars for a product I'd have to pay more money to use the thing. Am I wrong? Is there a simpler way?

You need to find out what your current ECU calibration is. If your not on the latest TSB you may see some performance gains by going to the

    * 04B04 - AT - T-0034-18

This can be done with the Tech Stream software ( Free here ) and a Taxtrix OBD adapter and cable ( Assuming you have a Windows Computer )

    Tactrix Openport 2.0

If you then decide to "Tune " with OV. ( vForest software ) You'll buy it from https://www.ovtuned.com/

Remember ....... tuning is optional. It's not for everyone. Most agree it's well worth it.

For perspective, a Cobb Access Port for my Macan was $1150 on the secondary market. 3 Tunes, no customizing. But... I sold it for $1150 plus shipping so it only cost me inflation dollars over the 2.5 years I had it.

I could be a $100 off on the price, but I netted out zero.

@mavric91 The simplest and cheapest way is to find someone local to you for the upgrade and or tune.

You won't regret it. I OVTuned my 2017 TD OR AT, lifted with heavy 33" tires and it was like driving a new truck.
Hands down the best $700 I spent on the truck.

    Just checking in,
Haven't been around since May 2020. and don't want to read 100's of pages.

I'm still running the Stumble start test tune. Haven't changed since I'm waiting for the final gear lock tune.

    Is it released yet?

Does anybody know what Toyota does for torque management on Autos? From the factory is timing, and or fuel/throttle changed during shifts?

There is a good document from Toyota somewhere in this thread. In short yes, torque is controlled by the ECM. The skinny pedal is a mere suggestion to the ECM that you would like to accelerate and it decides just how much power you get.

This isn't what I was looking for, but it partially answers your question.

Thank for the input. It makes sense and I’m not surprised Toyota does this. Now I just need to find out what Toyota did on the pre 03 automatics with the mechanical throttle bodies. I’m just assuming there’s some timing retard going on but since you can’t actually get inside the ECU to know for sure it’s hard to know what’s going on.

@OVTune was able to pull some maps from the 03-04 ECUs but I’m not sure if he might know what the previous models were capable of since it’s difficult to access.

I'm curious why you want to get into that ECM so bad.... Those trucks aren't that complicated, or not nearly as complicated as the 3rd Gen. Wouldn't your efforts be best directed to just putting in a Motec or some other equivalent? You could go just about anywhere and find a competent tuner that would be familiar with it, and you would have much more control/flexibility in the long run.
