Definitely. Going uphill, I either have to slam the throttle through the floor and skip shift from 6th directly to 4th (what 5th gear?) or just shift into S mode and get the same result. I agree that shifting from D mode into S mode should default to the gear that the truck is currently in.

I think I notice the gear number '4' on the dash console whenever I shift over to S. I can't recall if it's momentary or constant. But I'm pretty certain it defaults to 4th gear.

If it was a "sport/shift" mode, I would agree. That is the way most of the actual sport/shift mode selectors are to my knowledge.

Tacoma, on the other hand, got a shift restriction mode which limits the highest gear allowed to that which is selected. If Tacos defaulted to current gear then if you engage it at a stand still it would never leave 1st, which is not at all what Toyota was going for it seems.

I am one that agrees that IF @OVTune can make this a true sport mode holding the gear it that is selected it would be great. IT could assist crawling/towing/road trips/.... He did point out at one time that doing so MAY cause issues, I can not recall what all the possible drawbacks he saw.

I for one, prefer the 'top available gear' mode vs. a sport mode. I have my 'other' car for sport mode. My truck should drive well and 'pull crap' when I need it to. Really, the top gear limit is pretty smart in my mind. It just shows you that the gearing isn't quite what it should be when 4th is the default. I wish 5th was the default. Perhaps @OVTune could make the default a dealer's choice in the tune. Something you selected when you flash.

I agree. Perhaps it could drop down by one gear and you could assist it lower if needed but 6th to 4th is too harsh IMHO.

That's not a bad idea either... but I'm thinking it through: 65mph on the highway, with a load in the back and a slight grade coming up. Do I go ahead and preemptively shift to S, thus dropping a gear. Or do I let it try to hold the gear and then get stuck when it downshifts by itself.... then to keep it there I have to go to S thus dropping another gear. In these situations it's good to know your truck and what it will and won't do.

When using S mode it mostly defaults to 4, but have occasionally seen it go to 3. Never seen it go to 5.

Never have seen it go to 5th gear. Seems that the preset gear is 4th unless you are going too slow for 4th.

I have never seen it go into 5th when go to S mode, but the manual states the following:

The initial shift range in S mode is set automatically to 5 or 4 according
to vehicle speed. However, the initial shift range may be set to 3 if
the AI-SHIFT has operated while the shift lever was in the D position.

    Also this:

Selecting shift ranges using S mode restricts the upper limit of the possible
gear ranges, controls engine braking forces, and prevents unnecessary
    upshifting.

I've seen it default to 3 if, say I'm in D but going down a mountain and throw it into S and it will (often downshift) to 3rd. Rare I've seen it though. Normally 3 and perhaps it would shift to 5th if going fast enough but I've never tried shifting it over at higher speeds for fear of dropping to 4th going 80mph :)

So I did my upgrade last night. It took like 5 or 6 times before it completed. Kept giving me an ugly error about not turning off my truck for fear of permanent damage. I had to keep trying and quitting the program and restarting it. Did this happen to anyone else? If so, does it happen each time you re-flash it?

This happened to me some as well - may try a different USB cable, that seems to have worked for me

Never had an issue, pcmflash isn't exactly the most literate of applications but it works just fine.
