Tacoma - OVTUNE - VFTUNER - Update Info and Original Development

Thinking up some ideas... when I'm not working will throw some out!

For me it will be "Saviour" or "CBNC" (as in close but no cigar) and it will apply to whether I keep my truck or not. I've been thinking it needs a regear even with the tune, but decided I'm not throwing another $2k at a brand new nearly $40k truck to make it acceptably drivable (for me).

Today I came across a stupid good deal on a 3rd gen 4runner. I drove my nice new nearly $40k Tacoma with 5k miles on it over to this guy's place to test drive the 20 yo/120k mile 4runner. Fuck me...that 4runner feels like it's carved from billet. Makes my Tacoma feel tinny. It was no rocket ship, but that 190hp/235ft/lb motor with the 4speed auto just pulled smoooothly, no hiccups, no shifting drama and felt torquey right off the bottom and was plenty powerful. I told the guy I think I want it, and said I'd get back to him. I jump in my Tacoma and take off back to work...a mile away I hit a four lane road and the Tacoma starts it's shift dancing (improved with 1.02C, but still annoying). I called the guy right then and told him I'd take the 4runner...picking it up tomorrow AM.

1.02C has made the truck significantly better, but not completely satisfactory for me. I'll wait for 1.03, and I'm even going to run the 91 tune (or 93 if there ends up being one) and see what the difference is. If the 1.03 is the shit, hallelujah I'll keep the Tacoma and just get the 4Runner ready for my daughter who will be driving soon. If not, it's bye-bye Tacoma, and I'll spend a couple extra grand "modernizing" the 4Runner and keep as my daily driver for the time being...either way I'm actually pretty happy with my options for the first time since I bought the Tacoma.

 

So if we buy OVTune today, and the turbo comes out later, will we get the flash for that? Or will we have to pay again for that? Excited about the turbo option! But also want to be smart and not completely break the bank...

 

I concur. If 1.03 doesn’t “fix” the Tacoma problem, I’m likely out.

I love 4runners. I might just go 1st gen GX470. Kind of reminds me of the 4th Gen 4runner but with a V8. I test drove one the other day and it was just smooth.

 

The 1GR-FE with dual VVTI is the best damn engine toyota ever made. Smooth and efficient.

I really dont understand toyota with this 3.5 paired with the 6 speed shit. I get MAYBE 20 MPG average.

My fiancé with the 17 4runner gets 19.7 and its much more pleasurable to drive.

Part of me would get a laugh out of hearing a bunch of dudes bragging about running Cupid on their lifted, rock-crawling rigs given the Valentines dyno day...
