Can’t, it’s a work computer. They strictly prohibit that or virtualization software.

If @OVTune has been able to solve the MPG issue on these trucks w/o bringing along any unwanted side affects in terms of gear/transmission/engine wear which it sounds like he has, that would be awesome. I still scratch my head about Toyota and ask WHY? they did it this way - sure perhaps lazy but it just sounds like there must have been some other reason whether right or wrong why they would consciously calibrate it to only use its touted Atkinson cycle when basically coasting downhill with a tailwind.

Yesterday I did a 300 mile round-trip drive to paddle some whitewater. I had my kayak on the back racks of my truck but otherwise wasn't loaded at all. Climbing the plateau (about 2500 ft) with a bit of a headwinds and driving 70-78 mph most of the way, I got 13.5 mpgs on the way there. Return trip about 18 mpgs with slight tailwind descending back down. My day's average landed right at 16.8mpg for this trip.

Love the way the trucks driving still on the early 1.03 test I'm running but if it can hold gears longer, get me improved MPGs, AND I can start to save some pennies by running 87 without unwanted loss of noticeable power and smoothness... Take your time, Mat - you want perfection and we ain't gonna rush it!!!

I don't have enough miles on the new release yet, but I saw a 1.2 mpg improvement in a 75ish like run around town and highway.

I dont have any tune yet but have ordered and cant wait to reap the benefit of all of Mat's hard work (even on the weekend!). Can you share with me your thoughts on running the 87 tune vs the 91 tune? I am pretty new at this so looking for some info on pro's/con's other than cost difference between the octanes. thanks!

flashing is safe and easy so you can simply try both when you get it and compare for yourself. when you buy the tune kit you get the whole works, all versions for your ecu.

Really? Are we thinking the new 91 tune will perform much like the 87 and we
won't notice the HP loss by by running the lower octane? Or am I misreading
your post? I've been using 91 since before the first tune and have been happy
with it but it'd be nice to save some $$$ at the pump.

My understanding from folks running the 91+ octane 1.03 comparing to The 1.03b 87 they are saying it's better than the previous 91. I went straight to 1.03b 91+ an won't look back, hugeeeee improvement over the 1.03 91+.

wow, good to know but yeah, like you, I want ALL the power I can get so I'll
likely stick with the 91 tune when he drops 1.03 for A/T.

the newer version than yours is currently being released. 1.03B for the MT's and 1.03 for the AT'S. most but not all of the MT's now have it, and the 2018 MT's and all the AT's are waiting atm. this version has new ignition, timing, everything, totally different. so we're looking at 87's & 91's again as they are new.

Yea he advised going to the lower octane version first, but I didn't see any reasoning why. Glad I went straight to the higher octane, makes the 1.03(mt) tune feel stock compared to our 1.03b.

So if you get say a 1 to 2 miles per gallon bump with a tank capacity of 17 gallons that would be a 17 to 34 miles per tank full which would equal approx. the cost of 1 to 2 gallons of fuel making it about even paying for the 91 and getting all the benefits it provides.
This is how I justify the cost of better fuel.

To be clear, I'm not making any assumptions about the 87 tune, but it seems he has done a lot of 87 testing in his truck and has been pretty pleased with the results. I haven't had anything but 93 octane in my truck for well over 6 months now, but I started running it even before the tune because my truck ran like total garbage on 87. If I can save some dinero and run 87 and still be elated at the performance of the truck, oftentimes the 93 can be almost a dollar more per gallon in these parts so it does add up ;)

Yep, as you know, we don't get 91 in these parts of the world. I've only ever run the 87 tune, but I'm committed to try running 93 with 1.03 before I ditch this truck. 1.03 is make it or break it for me as far as this Tacoma goes. Having said that, the man himself says to try the 87 tune first. I can only assume that he has found something that makes him think people will be VERY pleased with the 87 tune. It doesn't make sense for him to suggest going to 87 first otherwise, so I'll try 87 and if that doesn't close the deal on keeping the truck I'll try running the 91 tune. It's getting very hard waiting because I bought a 3rd gen 4runner to replace the Tacoma (at least temporarily) and I have a long list of stuff I want to order for it...but I wanna run 1.03 first...it really is sounding like the Holy Grail at this point...lol
