    This is more-so related to mixing / atomization efficiency at low loads. Port injection does better than direct at low load / low RPM. The 2GR-FSE has this but has no atkinson modes.

    I was breaking in new bearings in my rear differential today. I had the truck on jack stands and in reverse it was really hard to maintain a consistent speed or rpm. Will your new fix tame this down Matt?

    Could be because you had the truck lifted and there is no weight on the wheels allowing them to spin more freely
    Edit- you usually dont even have to give it gas in reverse....

    No I could feel the engine surge.

    In forward gears it was smoother. I think it’s highlighting the touchy throttle in reverse.

    What % of the time do you drive in reverse?

    Anyone else notice the thickness of the piston heads? Seems skinny in thickness...maybe I’m use to older vehicles

    Also keep in mind reverse is the strongest (smallest?) gear of any of them...not sure if that matters

    Are you doing the "go to 35 and then slow down" thing to make it upshift before you set your cruise? I get the maxed out reading for mpg, too, as long as I've convinced the truck to upshift. If it's holding 3rd, the mileage is definitely lower. For the screen shots below, I had a hard time getting it to stay exactly at 30 mph in 3rd gear without using cruise, since with the engine in its power band, it wants to jump with the slightest throttle input. But the mileage bar is pretty close to what it would be at 30. I guess to be scientific, I should have gone out to an empty, flat road, and set cruise at 30 for both images...

    Yep, this is exactly what I was getting at.

    I had some time to kill during a kid sports practice last night, so I did a few test runs on a flat road near the school. I used grandma-style throttle and took the truck from zero to 60, briefly holding speed at 5 mph intervals to check rpms. I didn't log the exact numbers, but 5, 10, 15, 20, 35, 40, 45, 50, 55, and 60 all are under 1500 rpm. Some of them are as low as 1100. 25mph is turning maybe 1600 or 1700. 30 mph is 2000 or slightly above. "One of these things is not like the other."

    Eh?

    This happens with every engine, my motorcycles surge when the rear wheel is off the ground. Put it on the ground and the problem goes away.. you know.. like the vehicle is supposed to be. How the hell did you even find this out?!

    Installed an ARB 132 locker in the 8.0 rear diff. And it wasn’t like any of the other vehicles I’ve run on jack stands after doing differential work.

    Thanks for pursuing this. This higher rpm shifting at low load is my primary concern that is keeping me on the sideline.

    I asked this, maybe in the auto thread; but, I'm not sure I got the right answer. Can you tell me: what is the minimum speed that the transmission will shift into each gear? My stock example:

    2nd = 9 mph
    3rd = 15
    4th = 24
    5th = 31
    6th = 42

    The only thing, IMO, Toyota got right is the 6th gear upshift. It won't go to 6th until you go very light throttle; but, 5th, 4th, (and 3rd) come way too early while accelerating. Ideally, for heavy traffic, 20mph, 30mph, and 45mph zones I would propose something like 4, 10, 19, 29, and keeping 42. There is no reason I should have to hit ~2000rpm to ease up to 9mph in stop and go traffic.

    I was planning on asking @OVTune if I could work with him on an eco shifting tune based on a BSFC map once things settled down for him.

    no, I stop at the gate, then accelerate to 25 over about 1/8 mile (25mph zone) then 30 over about 1/8 of a mile (rest of my commute is 30)... I don't normally but, this AM I paid attention to the RPMS... I was sitting at 1500 and never broke 30.

    When is this releasing? I went to the 1.03 87 tune for a minute because where I had to go didn’t have much availability of 91. Ended up not being a problem though. The problem I have now is when I went back to 1.03 my truck sounds like it has aggressive cams because the rpm’s jump up and down. The throttle surge is really bad as well. When I flashed back to 91 1.03 I let the truck idle for 20 minutes. I have a little over 400 miles since going back to 91 1.03.
    I also noticed the truck is shifting like crap to. For whatever reason I’m hitting 6th gear on speeds 35-45mph. It’s definitely a different experience compared to when I flashed 1.03 the first time.

    I tried the clear DTC stuff but no luck.
    Not sure where to go from here.

    I will have it out very soon. Not sure why you are experiencing transmission shifting worse. Also I don't think it's possible to go into 6th at 35 mph.
