I thought OVTune has said as much when referring to the 2GR family on his site.
In this thread he mentioned how D has more maps than S.

Leave @dYL0n alone! My SpecU exhaust should be here tomorrow. Gadget called me personally to let me know.:humble:

*edit - He called me personally to let me know they messed up on shipping weight and that I owed them more money.

Sport mode on Lexus' do use different throttle maps sure but that's an entirely different application. S mode is not sport mode on the Tacoma. Why would it alter throttle maps? It's used to aid in towing to limit the tallest gear not make it more sporty. I'm not saying S mode isn't carryover code from Lexus, I'm sure it is but I doubt they made different throttle maps for S mode in the Tacoma. Certainly could be wrong though.

I'm sure this question was asked in other threads WRT the 3rd Gen, and there were some diagrams posted by (splitbolt?) showing more system complexity (ie CAN BUS signals). I've dug around a bit in the service manual, and it seems there are at least three assemblies involved in the 4WD Hi/Low and diff lock logic/monitoring - the ECM, 4WD ECU, and skid control ECU. If the 2nd gen mod was simply faking out the 4low engaged signal coming from the transfer case, we have a problem. The ECM "knows" that you've not switched to 4WD Low and will set a code:

    4 LOW DTC.jpg

I know, it's off topic... but the question was asked and I need to keep my mind occupied waiting for M/T feedback lol!

The Owners manual calls the S mode. Sequential mode. No where does it call it Sport mode.

    Are you serious?
Step 1: Go 25 mph, goose throttle.
Step 2: Repeat step 1 with ect pressed.
    Notice difference in throttle response.
    Notice truck never shifts gears.

    It's not hard to check.

Indeed he did. You can easily verify this by driving with ect on then off without switching gears.

Eighth Toyota is a 2016 Tacoma
Long time lurker....first time poster. Our 8th Toyota truck is a Tacoma and we have been less than happy with it....so I have been watching this thread closely and with high hopes.

However, a couple questions have come up that have given me reason to pause (plus the site showing sold out). Hoping the OVT team can cover these for myself and anyone else who may have the same questions.
    • Our truck is mostly driven locally where 91 octane is available but if I am 3 states away hauling another basket case motorcycle home and need gas....87 or 89 may be my only option. If I am ever expecting to need to run 87....do I need to wait for a different tune?
    • Similarly...our truck typically runs at a certain elevation. However, there are times where I will be coming through mountain passes and I would sure not want to damage the truck. How do we solve for folks who travel to different parts of the country?

Ideally the tune would be able to adapt...providing full power at lower elevations and higher octane...reducing power/timing/etc when the best ingredients are not available. Sure hoping that is the case.

Thanks in advance for your reply and info!

I beleive the point was S mode does not change these things. We all know that ect changes throttle and gear holds.

"We all" do not know that. That's what I was commenting on. I was as surprised as you.
