I know the variable displacement system is supposed to take over on the 3.5 but I think it really limits our rpms range. In ideal driving conditions it works but I can’t figure it out if it needs more gears or the 4600 rpm peak torque should have been my red flag. Heck I don’t really know anything about engines but I have faith in Matt figuring this puzzle out

We get 87, 89 and 93. Does that mean the 87 and 89 have no difference?

The octane difference is relatively minimal.

In the terms of the tune, they are the same. If you run 87, 89, or 91 on the 87 tune, nothing is going to change. On the 91 tune you must run 91 or higher unless your geographical locations dictate otherwise. Meaning if you're at an elevation, for example, of 5000 feet above sealevel, you don't need 91 octane unless you plan on going down significantly in elevation. Also it's harder to find higher octanes in higher altitudes because at higher altitudes you don't need as high of octane at say sealevel

Want a fast vehicle the tacoma was the wrong choice. Get a zL1 or a Hellcat. Otto cycle only would definitely help in certain areas though

Back on the 91 tune... Something seems to live outside of anything we flash/reset (such as long-term memory). It took about 2 full tanks of 87 before some of the old "stock" things that led me to burn 93 prior to being tuned resurfaced. that slight miss feeling when in 5th, a bit more vibes, etc., but didn't return immediately. Don't get me wrong, the 87 tune is still hands down better than stock as it does help throttle, shifting, and balance out power delivery a bit, but MY engine has never felt quite "right" running regular so back I go. Flashing back to 91 (with a full tank 93) was like taking ankle weights off it... I don't necessarily "like" spending anywhere between $10-20 extra for each fill-up but I'm convinced this engine was made to, and does, run better on premium fuel - tuned or not....
