I agree. I get better MPGs when it’s driven a little harder. I can really tear into it with ECT on and still not go below 19.

Agree with you 5th would be healthier. This engine was designed with higher tolerances from the previous gen. thanks to Lexus quality. It can have higher RPMs which seems weird in a truck but is perfectly natural and it can take it

Duh. Wind friction is the enemy...not to mention weight and 33”. Pay to play

If you put truck into S6 it will upshift sooner into 5th and 6th gear.

Does this tune make leisure driving better? Or does it only improve performance driving?

So today I was in 6th. Cruise control set on 65. Riding cool, 65ish degrees, flat land. Then I came across this (picture below) the truck shifted to 5th and stayed there for a mile or so. I had to go up to 68 then back down to 65 to get it to shift back to 6th.

Yes, this sad little “bridge” made it downshift. That’s what so fustrating about this truck.

That’s EXACTLY what I see on a day to day basis. Central VA isn’t THAT hilly. I don’t mind so much that it downshifts as much as it staying in 5th LONG after I’ve crested the hill.

I found 5-6 better in 1.03, the load theshold for the change down seems too low, needs increasing slightly to force the truck to stay in 6th until engine load goes up a sufficient amount.

5th gear in the 2nd gen (3.73 * .71 = 2.65:1) and 5th gear in the 3rd gen ( 3.92 * .69 = 2.70:1) are almost the same ratio. I'm not bothered at all by running in 5th gear for long stretches. I am bothered by the engine/exhaust tone and the engine vibrations from running near 2000rpm near 68mph.

I don't ever recall any 2nd gen AT owner complaining they needed a 6th gear to slow the engine down further. Or surely there would've been thread after thread about the sh!ty 6th gear.

My commute seems more leisurely. Everything seems better, in fact it has made me want to calm down a bit more when driving and just cruise

It is both. Driving around town in this tuned truck is SO much more enjoyable. Driving on the freeway is a breeze compared to how I used to have to fight the truck to go 70 mph.

But if you step on it, you will without a doubt feel the performance gains as well :bikewhoops:

The truck shouldn’t be in 6th before 65-75 mph. It is a tall gear and was designed for higher cruising speeds. 5th is more than tall enough for 70 or less and can achieve superb mileage with the tune. Shifting will all depend on how aggressive the acceleration and when the TCU dictates it is the right time to shift if your speed is constant at the proper speed. Not sure why people on here think they should be at 6th at 60mph...not healthy for the tranny

6th is a cruising gear, therefore at a stable speed with enough rpm (1500rpm+ IMO) it should change to it.

Technically 1200rpms is cruising RPMs for this engine. If the truck still thinks you are accelerating or holding RPMs higher for a reason it is actually doing you a favor but NOT shifting so you have the power to accelerate when you need to. Watch your RPMs next time when you get above 65 and hold 1200. Perfect shift

Once custom tunes opens up I’m going to ask for 2 things.

    1 - S mode to match current D gear when selecting/switching into S mode.

2- to remove automatic downshifting in S mode gear3,4,5,&6. If possible, so the truck will hold the selected gear and eliminate unwanted load based downshifts on small minor inclines. If the manual trucks can lug along in a gear I see no reason why the autos can’t. There are tons of sections of road that the truck will down shift for less than 5 to 10 second in normal driving. I would like the option to eliminate some of these wasted shifts.

I volunteer to test and data log @OVTune

I still really like 104. Truck drives smooth. Reversing up my driveway is a night and day difference between 103.

    SMOOTH

I also think some transmission learning is still happening based on my experience. But by design, and for a good outcome. For example I'm seeing it shift up to 5th in places where it didn't want to leave 3rd before and the shift points overall in city driving just feel "right" and I was remarking on my drive just now how I know the exact point on the throttle when I can force a 5th to 4th downshift with ease - same pedal position every time. Love this tune!
