I'm surprised TacomaWorld members haven't made a mass complaint about this to Toyota. I mean, I seen and read the reviews online, plus all the other consumer reports, edmonds, etc... and still no legitimate fix. I bought my Taco January of this year knowing the 2nd revision ECU/Tranny flash (TSB) was being done. Yet still the throttle response is horrible.

IMHO and I agree with others. The factory flash is dangerous on the highway! By the time the Taco responds to WOT you burned some time trying to merge or move over a lane. I wouldn't be suprised if someone sues Toyota over this if they get hurt in an accident.

I pretty much drive my Taco with the ECT on all the time.....lol

    When to use your ECT
Using your vehicle’s electronically controlled transmission, your Toyota’s engine is able to shift at higher revs. That being said, a good time to use this function of your engine is when you need to accelerate quickly, such as when merging onto the freeway. Acceleration is noticeably quicker with the Electronic Controlled Transmission on, however it should be noted that it significantly decreases your vehicle’s efficiency. So while you could leave it on and experience the influx of power all of the time, if you’re looking to save at the gas pump, we wouldn’t recommend it.

Hopefully that answers any questions about the Toyota ECT button. For more answers about your vehicle, as well as Toyota-related news and information, be sure to check out the rest of our blog. If you have any other questions, feel free to ask below or contact us here at New Rochelle and we’ll be sure to get back to you.

The only important part is if the single exit exhaust port matches the FKS. I'm betting it does given Toyotas history of how they do their engines.

Like the 2gr fe, 2gr fse, 4gr fse etc all use indetical flanges / bolt pattern spanning 10+ years without change.

It seems Toyota likes to make as little new pieces as possible and re-use anything they can.

It's not going to be a miracle. The throttle lag is alot less and it acclerates more smoothly. Getting on the interstate takes less effort. I can hold gears a little better. This is also just the alpha tune. You may want to wait until he has time to work on it more. The tune does make my truck feel more like the 4.0. the 4.0 was no speed demon either. I feel like the tune was well worth it. The good thing is that it's only going to get better with each update.

Ha, I did the same thing when I was on the Big Island in January. Missed my Taco instantly with all the rough ride on the rough roads - made me really appreciate my Taco's suspension! Still fun though. Enjoy!

Hawaii loves their Tacos though so it will be hard not to see 100s of them pass you by to remind you of your baby sitting at home waiting for a tune...

To expand a bit on what @OVTune said, the mounting of the turbo is the hard part for us, the required tune is what still make the engine work right and get around the shortcomings. IMO Toyota probably went with the small bore long stroke to keep cylinder wall thickness high for longevity and still maintain the displacement. Small bore, long stroke motors are well suited to boost because the turbo can make up for the reduced high rpm breathing that the cylinder wall shrouding the valves causes, while also low rpm the breathing is less effected and the turbo can still spool quickly.

In our large bore/short stroke motors, the turbo aren't likely to spool as soon(especially because our motor isn't designed with it in mind! ), but that works to our advantage easing the tuning due to the higher compression ratios making tuning much more tenuous at low RPM.

I'm a long time Toyota Truck owner...4 Tacoma's (back to '98 including this one) and 2 Tundra's. I LOVED my '98 Tacoma and loved all the others except for this one. I came from a 2005 Tundra DC TRD 4x4 (RIP). After I totaled it I needed another truck. I test drove a new Tundra TRD CrewMax, and Tacoma TRD DCOR and a Chevy 1500 LTZ (just because they were having STUPID $12K discounts.). The Chevy motor was great, but the rest of the truck was too old-man for me (I'm not an old man yet, at least not in my head), but damn it was ALOT of truck for the money with all the options it came with (it ended up being between the Tundra and Tacoma price wise). So it was down to the Tundra and Tacoma. I actually preferred the Tundra on the short test drive. That motor is just smooooth and the power is great. The interior went on for days. I swear you could have sex in the back seat and the people in the front would not even know it. :D The Tacoma felt cramped in comparison (even compared to my 2005 Tundra) but I live ITP (Inside The Perimeter in Atl) and 75% of my driving is in the city so I didn't really want a truck as big as the new Tundra and I was tired of getting 13 MPG. Ultimately is was the $5K price difference, smaller size and 18 MPG (combined) I expected to get that made me pick the Tacoma.

So, how does this relate to this tune? Well, at this point, I wish I'd bought the Tundra. I'm getting in the 14s combined MPG with shitty drivability. I HOPE that my truck is a replaced crankshaft position sensor away from getting decent (not great) MPG, but with only 700 miles on it, I'm reluctant to make any big changes, including this tune, yet. If I can get my MPGs up to 18 and make the damn thing DRIVE the way it should, I may be able to love it...I don't need big power (even though it's nice, remember my favorite was a 2.7 I4 Tacoma AC), I just want smoooooth predictable delivery of what is there based on what my right foot is doing. While I'm very appreciative of what OV is doing and I don't think his price is crazy, I'm pissed off at Toyota for building a truck that I'm going to have to end up spending possibly close to $1000 on to make it right (the tune and CPS if I never get on the recall) simply from a driving experience standpoint when I just spent $35K to buy it. I would consider selling it and getting a Tundra but at this point I don't want to give Toyota any more of my money. Reward bad behavior and you get more of it. At this point I'm trying to decide if I will throw $1000 at it in the next 1000 miles or so to see if I can make it right or if I just drive it as is and wait for the new Frontier or possibly even test drive a new Titan and see if they float my boat.

OT...millennials...yea, as a generation, they have their own unique issues (like not understanding that tuning an overly rich engine IS tuning for more power...;)), but all generations do. Everyone needs to be treated as an individual. I don't believe in lumping people into negative groups based on things they have no control over. On top of that, the issues the millennials do have as a generation are the consequences of the cultural environment that we (Gen X and Baby Boomers) created for them...so if we want to blame anybody for the "millennials issue's" we probably ought to look in the mirror first.

I'm really not sure where the whole "millennials don't work hard" rhetoric came from, I worked damned hard to get my engineering degree and am paying for my truck(and my degree!) myself. Still not working hard enough I guess...

It's a way older folks feel important.

It's also hilarious, and ironic, that there is this idea that millennials don't take responsibility for anything or are entitled...all the while the previous generations don't seem to be taking any responsibility for having raised us. And God forbid a millennial get promoted ahead of an older person based on merit because "I've been here for years! I am entitled to that spot!"(by function of being a warm body sitting there for years)

    I digress.

I've also noticed when people make claims about millineals and you call them out, they back pedal so fast. "Oh not you. You work hard!" Or "I didn't mean it like that".

You mean like I just did, 5 posts above? Don't fall into the trap of doing to others what you don't like being done to you (casting dispersions on a whole group of people based on something they have no control over). Let's just let this generational bashing die....at least in this thread. :D

Let's stick to the tune for our trucks, not generation XYZ vs generation ABC. I'm sure we all work hard.

I've ordered mine and waiting to hear feedback from others that have installed or working on installing.
