Hey Tacomaman06, if you do decide to paint remember..........applying a coating properly is 110% Metal prep. The metal has to be almost to a shiny finish ie, sandblasting, sand paper, highpressure washing if it isn't already rust bloomed. SO just clean the hell out of it before you coat it or it will not hold over a year or so and will form corrosion cells under the coating you applied.

    good luck

    getting there....
yeah, when i do it, im gonna do it the right way. i'll probably brush alot of it, as its only surface rust, and the real bad parts, i'll sand it out and primer/paint, then probably use some undercoating on it. before i do anything as far as that goes though, im gonna use a pressure washer and make sure the inside parts of the frame are cleaned out real good. its gonna take me a while.....gotta alotta other stuff to do before then, but it wont be too long, and it should serve its purpose pretty well.

    thanks for the tips man!!:)

How does that (can)rubberized undercoating hold up to heat, peeling, scratching off?

The letter I got in the mail about my 04 said you can only bring it in to get inspected if the state you live in uses road salt in the winter months for de-icing. otherwise they won't even look (from what I interpreted from the letter). Being I live in CA where they do not use road salt I'm SOL on the inspection.

how can i get mine checked my dealer is retarded, they told me today, and this was the manager "we only replace it if it has a hole in the frame and only where there are cross beams in the center, the frames do not rust from the inside. they refuse to do the hammer test saying that such a thing is obsurd. they say that the visible rust on my frame is not eligable for the recall and that toyota will not provide an undercoating if my truck passes"

how can i get someone that knows something to check out my truck. and how can i get to his boss to file a complaint with the whole service dept

also the whole time he kept trying to pressure me to trade mine in and buy a second gen. OBSURD I SAY!

Anyone that owns a 2001-2004 get a letter from Toyota yet? I have no idea if my VIN# is one affected...I do know I live in one of the snowiest places in the U.S.A. and my truck sees major salt. I was at the dealership a month or two ago and mentioned the undercoating/frame replacement thing to a technician. He said he hadn't heard about it yet. I wash underneath often in the winter and the frame doesn't look to bad considering the salt it gets exposed to but there is rust. I would like to have them do the under/inner frame rustproofing.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Just call the dealer and set it up. You don't have to wait on the letter.

I had no idea there was a rust problem. Also I'm not sure if Okc, OK use salt. Does anyone know?

    Is this for real?

I just sold my 2004 to buy a 2009. I had a fair amount of rust on the frame but am not sure how deep it went. The freaking dealer probably sold it back and reaped the benefit!

In Western PA, we drive on salt covered roads for 5 months of the year.

Hell, I already have surface rust on my 2009.

Everything I read online says it only goes from January 1995 to September 2000.

+1 for the great post thanks HighSierra. 98tacoma27 thanks as well. Looks like I have until Oct. 2010 to get the frame inspected so I'm not gonna stress about getting the truck in right away. Getting the rust treatment done before next winter would be nice though. I really like this truck and I want to keep it awhile! It just broke 44,000 miles on the odo last week.

I would think by now, Toyota must be livid at Dana Corp unless it was something spec-wise on their end.

This is beyond pricey at this point.

My 08 Frame is showing rust in spots. I work about 15 miles from the beach in California though. Kind of disappointing knowing i have 3.5 years left on my loan, and it looks ghetto under the frame. I really don't offroad much, and when i do i wash the crap out of in under it.

There is a ton of misinformation out there. This is now getting extremely expensive for Toyota so you have to advocate for yourself. Keep asking to speak with someone else until you get a decent answer. Consider the following:

    I NEVER received the letter

I have no ida if my VIN falls into the relevant range

I had my frame replaced in CALIFORNIA

They had a hard time deciding whether to BUY IT back or fix it (that is, the do whichever they think will be cheaper after inspecting the truck...replacement is simply not an option for pre-2001 trucks)

    My Tacoma is a 2001

I cannot tell the difference...truck drives just like it used to.

i have had multiple arguments with the service manager at my local dealer, he says the recall will not apply to my truck and they do none of the service id have to pay out of pocket., and they wont even inspect them

i went to my dads took it to the yota dealer there. they said theyed be happy to do the inspection and if rust was found an under coating when they were open, i didnt have time this week but will deff go there next time i visit, keep fighting with the dealer till you get what you want if they dont comply call toyota corperate

the local dealer still refuses to accept the facts of the tacoma recalls and constantly ask if i want to trade in my truck,
