Diesels typically produce less CO than a gas engine and modern DPFs are very good at removing DPM. Diesels run pretty damn clean these days.

Many diesel engines are made of different materials than gas engines to handle way more pressure. Hence why you can boost the shit out of a stock diesel, compared to a stock gas engine.

Yes this is VW but all other diesel manufactures are being pushed that way and they all have DPFs now as well as run on ultra low sulfur diesel.

Unfortunately the way diesel is priced offsets any mileage increase.

In recent news, the WHO has reclassified diesel exhaust as a group 1 carcinogen. Gasoling exhaust remains a group 2B. 1 means "definitely', '2B' means 'possibly'. Doubt this will help the case.

Yes it cost less to make but you can get more gasoline out of a barrel of oil than diesel which is why it cost more. Diesel is already a product of Crude oil, but gasoline is a little bit of most of the draws from the towers

Here's a recent edmunds comparison between cars claiming 40mpg. All are compact-subcompact gas models except for the much larger VW passat tdi. The larger automatic VW is averaging 51.7mpg @ 70mph on an interstate trip, more than 12mpg than the closest competitor, the manual VW should squeeze out 1-3 more mpg as owners have reported. The hw mpg is great and all but the low range torque is what really would be cool in a smaller or mid-sized pickup for off roading and towing-work. The biggest gripe for me with diesels in general is the initial cost over the gas model.
    http://www.edmunds.com/fuel-economy/the-40-mpg-challenge.html

As millage standards increase, it will be interesting to see how they will be met in the USA. And European diesel emission standards will also catch up to California CARB in the next few years, which should make it easier to bring those engines over without further mods to meet Cali standards. The Chevy Cruze and Mazda models have been confirmed for US with diesels for 2013. The Jeep Cherokee is also coming in 2013 with the 3L V6 they use everywhere else making 241hp and 406lbs at 1800rpm. The same engine is rumored to be going in the Ram 1500, we will see. Don't have much faith in the Chrysler/Fiat products, so best to wait a few years if they come out. Hopefully this will get the ball rolling for Japanese makers but I'm not holding my breath.

Other than the fire trucks I used to drive, I've never owned a diesel truck, but have owned 6 diesel cars (1 Nissan, 5 VW's). My wife just got a new Golf TDi, and it is awesome. GTI suspension, 48 MPG on the hwy with me driving (75 MPH). Ton's of fun- the torque is really addictive. The problem is the cost to buy and maintain. It was almost $5K more than the 2.5L Golf, and while it is much better equipped, it will take years to make up the fuel savings/purchase price differential. Maintenance costs are huge as well- the timing belt changes, oil changes, injectors, all that stuff, is way more expensive than gassers.

I'm waiting to see what the GC 3.0 costs- my guess will be in the upper 30's to low 40's, similar to a Tuareg TDi, but even more so, what is the MPG gain? If I get 20 MPG in a DC 4.0, and I improve it by 30% with a small diesel, that's still only 26 MPG. Also, don't forget that diesel is commonly more expensive than gas, which it didn't used to be, so that impacts savings as well.

Bottom line is I can't see a 2-ton, ladder framed, 4wd box on wheels getting 30 MPG like people want, and still be affordable.

try a 5.4L with the 6 speed, you need L with that POS engine.

I can't believe people are still excited about diesels when direct injected gasoline is almost the same in every way (high compression and torque) and costs less per gallon. I know there's less energy in a gallon of gas vs diesel, so it kind of evens out there.

    Not truck engines, I know...
    Mazda 2.3L 263 HP 280 ft-lb turbo
    Chevy Ecotec 1.4L 138 HP and 148 ft-lb turbo
    Lexus 2.5L 204 HP 185 ft-lb no turbo and 12:1 compression ratio
    Lexus 3.5L 306 HP 277 ft-lb no turbo and 11.8:1 compression ratio
    Hyundai, BMW, Porsche, Subaru, etc...
Not a single non-Lexus Toyota or Honda or Chrysler? Really sad.

    Toyota Hilux diesels
    3.0L 169 HP 265 ft-lb
    2.5L 142 HP 252 fl-lb

    Toyota gasoline trucks (port injection)
    2.7L 159 HP 180 ft-lb
    4.0L 236 HP 266 ft-lb

    Ford truck
    Ecoboost 3.5L 365 HP 420 ft-lb Semi-exotic twin turbo V6, but still.

Is it about mileage? Diesel sound? I used to like diesels before the emissions controls went overboard and they were outclassed by GDI. Durability? That's about the only real advantage I can think of anymore. I'll be lucky to get 70,000 miles on my truck before I get another vehicle.

6.4? Ugh. Only thing worse than that was the 6.0. Hop in a 6.7 and get back to me. ;)

Yeah we got a couple 6.4s, a 6.0, and a 6.7 but that's too new for me to get to drive. Hah.

I get to work on all of em.
