my comparison was to 87 octane not premium.

of course if you use premium you might as well just stick with that inefficient gas guzzler of an engine.

    &
jtav2002 - "If there was an actual demand they would have it here."

do you think there is a crazy demand for diesel VW's or diesel BMW's or diesel Mercedes? NO!!
but why are they bringing clean burning diesel technolgy to the USA?
for shits & giggles? na, its because of the MPG craze.
some of these new diesels are outperforming the gas/electric hybrids on the market...thats why.
look at the UK its mostly high priced diesel fuel and high MPG cars/trucks/vans etc.

mark my words ...it will happen in the USA within the next 4 years.

what are they going to do?
develop a gutless hybrid engine to go in the Tacoma? ala- the Prius
    or
try to improve on the current technolgy they use everywhere else in the world.
because when the new regs go into effect these little 4&6 cylinder guzzlers are out.

    Head unit. That's it.
At 5-8 MPG better...it would take a long, loooong time to see the benefits when you consider the added cost of maintenance, and fuel. If you live in a northern area, you'd need to plug it in at night during the winter months which is an added electricity cost as well. I really want one, but financially it doesn't make sense, which is why there IS a market in America. People will buy them, because they are "cool" and "different" and won't even consider the added costs. Those who do consider these costs won't buy them. I'm going out on a limb here to say that the majority of people won't do the math and figure it out.

The UK is a terrible comparison. Gas is taxed so high people WANT cars with tiny motors and diesels. Cars also have a much broader market. People who are buying diesel cars and hybrids are doing so because they are more MPG minded people and the return is s substantial. In some cases you're gaining nearly 20 MPG by going that route. Diesel trucks currently aren't yielding that kind of an improvement over their gas counterpart. People buying diesel trucks for capability purposes more than MPG concerns here. Are people really going going to pay north of $30k for a non bells and whistles SR5 Tacoma with a diesel? People already complain how expensive mid size trucks have become. Look at the TRD OR. Put a diesel in that you'd probably have a nearly $40k truck. Its a much easier pill to swallow paying the diesel premium on a $20k Golf to get 50 MPG that outperforms a hybrid than it is to further price the Tacoma into the full size class and still not be as capable.

FAWK IT I'll buy a TDI Touareg and a 6.7 Cummins. Toyota pulls trail duty.

Just a couple more diesel classes!

I compared to premium to show that diesel is more expensive than even the best gas. I would never run premium in my truck, no point.

I change my mind, I fully expect there to be a Tacoma available soon with a Cummins and an Allison transmission. If this truck doesn't come to market yielding fuel economy of 40mpg or better and costing less than $30k I am boycotting Toyota.

Holy fuck they want a lot for that Touareg. Nice ride but damn a lot more than I figured. The 3.0L TDI would be fucking sweet though.

I did test drive a Jetta instead. Nice cars, the new ones are a whole lot less - gay. TDI and 43mpg makes it a lot more desirable too.
