It's time we have another cook-off in here! This time, I'm trying to give enough of a lead on it so that we can build a little excitement, gather some awesome prizes, and get the participation level up!

I'm also going to solicit ideas from the peanut gallery for the next week or so regarding format, voting structure, etc. Please note that ALL ideas will be considered, but they may not all be implemented. Some just don't jive with the voting tools at our disposal, timing, etc. Still, I want to make these cook-offs a regular thing, so whatever gets folks involved works for me!

Here is the only thing that I do know - submissions for this cook-off will be due no later than the end of the day on Sunday, June 30th.

In cook-offs of the past, we have basically had an open category (save for the Pitfaced/Non-Pitfaced categories), everyone who enters posts their cook in a single post with one picture being used for their official submission, and we open voting to the public during the voting period. Most votes wins, second most gets second, etc.

What do you all think/want to see? Different categories? Should we have a panel of judges or leave it a public poll? Maybe a combined judging?

Even if you don't have any recommendations on the format, just post up that you're interested so we can gauge the interest level!

Also of import, who would like to donate some goodies for prizes? As per the usual, Pitfaced BBQ will be putting up some prizes - rub and swag for sure. Anyone else want to get in on it? Let's blow this thing up!

    Format proposals:

Pitfaced BBQ Category and Open Category

Judging Panel + Community Votes - This would allow for a judges winner and a community winner.

To start, this will NOT be limited to grilling/smoking. This is for cooks of ALL types, so bust out your best recipe for the smoker, crockpot, oven, grill, brick oven, open fire, air fryer, toaster, George Foreman grill, cast iron, microwave, Dutch oven, or whatever else you can whip up some mean food in.

For the category options, we have the following:

    1. Pitfaced BBQ Category & Open Category - This would be one category where you have to cook with Pitfaced BBQ Meat Massage rub and include the logo in your submission photo. The second category would be open to all other rubs/seasonings and wouldn't need Pitfaced BBQ represented in the picture. Both categories would be completely open with regards to the type of food cooked. Users would be allowed to enter both. There would be a bigger prize structure for the Pitfaced BBQ category (bigger 1st prize + prizes for more places). Voting would be done by the community via a poll option.

    2. Main Course Category & Sides/Dessert Category - This would be one category for all main course options and another category for all sides & desserts (so two total categories). For instance, if you cooked a steak, you'd put it in the main category and if you cooked jalapeno poppers or bread pudding, you'd put it in the sides/desserts category. Users would be allowed to enter both. There would be a bigger prize structure for the main course category (bigger 1st prize + prizes for more places). Voting would be done by the community via a poll option.

    3. One Open Category w/Community Vote Winner and Judge's Panel Winner - For this, there would be a single open category where folks can cook whatever they want with whatever they want and would submit it to a single contest. Smoked brisket vs oven roasted turkey vs grilled jalapeno poppers vs homemade pecan pie, for instance. There would be winners based off of two voting mechanisms. The first would be community votes via a poll option. The second would be among a small panel of judges who would discuss privately and select a winner. There would be a bigger prize structure for the community voting category (bigger 1st prize + prizes for more places).

    Get your vote in!

Reserved because I'm sexy and I know it.

I'm sure we're down for some prizes as usual.

As for the contest itself I think on the PF categories it should be a panel of judges (they should get to taste lmao) on the open ones (I think there should be a few, like beef, chicken, wild game) it should be open voting for popular choice.

So in essence you could be be in 1 of 5 contests or all 5 of them with the possibility of winning out. ZACH

    :bananadance:.

I think I may try this contest out...

Judging panel would be cool. Could do like on SMF... Judges choice and popular vote. Judges vote behind close doors, then poll for people's choice?

PF category obviously, and an open category worked well last time. Not sure how thin you want to stretch it with beef/chicken/etc...

I could retire and volunteer for a judge spot and post a pic for fun to torment @WBF610 and some others.

    I’m in.

I like the Judge panel idea. That way @Misplaced Nebraskan can’t go and spam every thread pandering for votes!!!!!!

Seriously though, I like the panel idea, as well as a popular vote. Maybe a whose who of mods could do judging.

Other than that, I’m open to any ideas. Maybe do a cook off style, have to enter 3-4 meats, judges score each entry separately for category winner, then a grand champ off of total or average for all three. Might be hard to do since the whole taste thing can’t be accomplished. Maybe just presentation and appearance of the meat for score.

Only the first one I super pandered

And usually it was after you already posted:rofl:

But a judge panel would be awesome I think. Hard when it is a photo contest really, but still a lot of fun.

Email all submissions with no discussion for anonymity. Judges vote and forum vote? No pandering ;)

You are probably trying to import an elephant brisket, prime grade, or something for this one.
