Tail light mod (both lights used as brake and signals)?

Reviews have been inconsistent when it comes to the hyper flashing, but more than likely, you will need to add the resistors if you are going to do the Turn as Tail mod. For me, I did not need it until I turned on my headlights and/or pressed on the brakes (only while the turn signal was blinking). I've seen others say this was not a problem until the truck was running (with headlights and turn signal on). It's weird, but whatever. The only consistency I have noticed is that it works flawlessly when you have resistors.

So my recommendation is to buy the resistors before you install anything. It's better to have them on hand (and not use them) then it is to need them, have to stop your install, and deal with hyper flashing (and an unfinished project) until you can get the resistors in later.

Okay so I could use some help. I did this mod and it worked great when the truck was off and just acc power on (hit start twice).

With the truck running, from what I can tell the brake and lights are fine but the turn signals are intermittent. They will either blink once, not blink at all (and no indicator on dash) or they will blink normally. This seems very strange...any ideas? I do have resistors in there so at first I thought maybe I should take those out of the equation and see what happens maybe running both lights needs more power or something but it doesn't make sense that when the truck isn't running it seems fine.

More info please, are you using the Diode Dynamics module? Did you use the schematic from post #112? Any loose wires?

Yes, using the diode dynamics module with the diagram from this thread which also shows resistors. No loose connections. I thought I had one, so I ended up removing all the butt connectors from the DD module and use some better connectors. Where I had to connect three wires I soldered them (DD output to blinker/brake).

I've posted this before, but our stock flasher relay is hyper sensitive. I.E too much resistance and you get the hyperflash, too little and it will flash once and quit until you start the truck again. Finding the balance is tricky. And unfortunately the flasher cannot be changed out as it's built into the gauge cluster. Try removing the resistors and trying. Or go do a different OHM resistor.

When I put the LED's in, I only had hyperflashing when the lights were on or if I was hitting my brake. So maybe it isn't needed with both of the LED's running.

Removed the resistor and now it's working, except hyperflashing with lights on now. Ugh. I have a 6ohm so maybe a 3? Not sure what I can find. Or maybe those zevo led lights will work better.

Sounds like I’m having a similar issue as OdiN1701

Tried installing this today and this is what happened:

Without the resistor, it will hyper flash when in night mode (headlights on). When in daytime mode, it seems like everything works perfectly fine.

With 1 resistor (5 ohm) installed in the turn signal circuit, no lights work in any mode.

So I thought maybe I needed a resistor on the brake light circuit too, so I installed a resistor (5 ohm) on the brake light to see if they will start working, but no luck.

I ended up taking it all off.

It sounds like what we need to find out is the exact resistance. It has to be between 3-6ohms.

FYI: I followed the attached diagram.

So I ordered a pair of 3 Ohm resistors. I should have them Tuesday. Without a resistor (and before this mod) I would hyperflash if brakes pressed or lights on (night). During the day it was fine.

With the resistor (6 Ohm) it fixed all of that.

Now that I did this mod, it works fine with the truck turned to acc mode, but not on with the 6 Ohm resistors.

With no resistors, back to the same issues as before - works during the day but not at night or when brake is depressed. So I'm hoping splitting the difference works.

Which brand of LED’s did you use?

I used Sylvania 7443R LED’s from Walmart for brake and turn and Sylvania ZEVO 921 6000K Super Bright LED’s for the backup lights. Just one 6ohm resistor as drawn in the schematic and no issues (they hyperflashed before adding the resistors).

Yeah, well some people had no hyperflashing when they replaced things with the same stuff I'm using. It seems the variance between the different trucks is enough to be infuriating.

hmm. I was planning on doing this today, but now I'm wondering if I should wait. I do have some 6 ohm resistors I intended to put on the blinker side. I run with my headlights on a lot so I got to make sure everything is working correctly lol

What I would recommend is to replace all the connectors with something like the spade connectors that can be removed easily so you can add/remove the unit or resistors. That's what I did so I just pulled the resistor out and can solder on new spade connectors when I get the new resistors. But it would let you test and still be able to remove the module/resistor if it didn't work and you would have normal functionality.

Good idea. My plan was to solder all wires then heat shrink with e-tape and loom to protect wires and then silicone ends on t to t box since it's open. Sounds like the issues are more or less with the turn signal part, but brakes are working correctly all the time, right?

Yeah just turn seems to be the problem. Heat shrink would be nice but just electrical tape stuff up well.

Do these issues still occur if using normal halogen bulbs for both turn and brake rather than swapping them out for led's?
