Tail light mod (both lights used as brake and signals)?

IF you plan on going with the PRO tails (which I have been dying to do as well...along with everything else), it's just a simple swap of the factory housing that does not effect or is effected by this mod at all.

I can't speak for the Winjets, but I assume that it would be effected by this mod (meaning that you'd have to put to back to stock before installing the Winjets).

 

Yes I agree on winjet. I have them and although they use the oem harness and wiring, internally on the housings they are wired slightly different. I plan to re-wire my winjet someday

@mesojdm I know this is a 3rd gen thread but would you be willing to make this kit for the 2nd gens as well. Would it be similar to that one 2nd gen tail project you made @memario1214? As I am going to try and attemp that project in the future as it is so bad ass.

 

Hello, I was instructed to post my tail as turn issues in this thread.

I have a 17 Tacoma Pro, that I purchased these for ...


Installed, everything works great in the garage KOEO. Drive to the end of the block and I get one flash with the blinker and then nothing, same with the other side.

Turn the parking lights on, and everything works as advertised. Parking lights off, no turn signals, drive back to the garage. Shut the truck off, works weather the parking lights are on or off.

Key On Engine Running: Blinkers only work with parking/running lights on.
Key On Engine Off: Works perfectly


Installed 6 ohm resistors front and rear. I have emailed Diode Dynamics to see if they might have a fix for my issue. I have found a couple of threads but couldn't seem to find a fix

 

I'm either really stupid or really old, what does KOEO mean?

Sounds like you're having the same issue that a few others had. It would work until you press the brakes and then turn on the turn signal (with the brakes still engaged). Once you do that, the turn signal only blinks once then there is nothing until you turn off truck and then turn it back on.

Everyone who had this issue solved it by putting bigger resistors in the rears. So far, everyone who put in 9 or 10 ohms (in the rear) seems to be working without issues.

If you wanted to try something, you could take the resistors from the front and add it (in series) to the other resistors in the rear. It might be too much resistance at 12 ohms total, but since you have them on hand, it might be worth testing out before you order more resistors. If it does happen to be too much resistance, it won't hurt anything (I've tested this...lol)

Of course, when you take out the resistors in the front, you'll have to put in your OEM halogen bulbs while you do this test.

 

Awesome, thank you. I unfortunately won't be able to test this with the front resistors as I have already soldered and heat shrinked everything. I'll go ahead and get some 9 ohm resistors ordered and update with my findings.

Kudos to solder & shrink wrapping...it's the best way to do it (outside of having MESOJDM design & build a complete drop-in)!! Hope the 9 ohms fixes it for you too!

 

Hey Guys educate me, I am waiting for the arcol 9 Ohm resistors to come in so I can finish this mod. Here's my question, I replaced all my bulbs to Philips Leds in the tail lights; front blinkers, and front side markers. Philips recommended adding their Vision LED 21W 12V load cancellar to the front and rear lights which I did so my question is, do I need to replace the Philips on the rear with the arcol resistor. Already have the DD just waiting on the arcol. Thanks for any help.

 

Don't quote me, but I think you're still going to need them on the tail lights to prevent hyper flash when signal is activated.

 

Thanks, why I'm confused is I was reading the specs on the Philips which is 21W and 12V but I can't find what Ohm they are. They are for anti-flickering, hyper flash, and error codes so whats the difference?

 

Basic calculations with those values gives us a resistance of 6.86 ohms...so it'll have a rating close to that value depending on the materails they used.

 

Thank you! I believe I will remove the Philips cancellar from the rear replace it with the Arcol 9Ohm resistors and DDs and leave the Philips on the fronts. Will get back when I get it done.
