Your 2017 has a tailgate assist from the factory, I'm adapting the 3rd gen set up to the 2nd gen

Anyone know if the assist pistons will work with a tailgate that has a steel reinforcement top?

    Hello,
I have a Relentless Fab Tailgate reinforcement plate (aluminum) on my ‘15 DCSB. My wife has a hard time opening the tailgate and we use it quite often. Saw some great ideas in this post!

Great idea man. Are they still working well for you?

Thank you for posting the part #’s!

Did you try one 1st and saw it wasn’t enough or you started with 2 from the get go?

Also, is it harder to close with one dampener installed? Or 2?

    Thank you!

Mine uses no oz strut, it utilizes the 3rd gen assist parts, works perfect

    Hello,
That sounds like it will work great! Do you have the part #’s handy? Also, is there a write-up on this? I’m not a mechanic but “fairly” handy.

Will the hose clamp mod interfere with this?

I thought about what you wrote here & wondered why you don't just put 4 nuts/bolts through the bracket & reattach it to your tailgate? You said it was working good otherwise. Just curious since you will literally only have to buy 4 nuts/bolts. That will be a much cheaper route.

True, I did the two pivot point brackets. The bracket that was bolted to the tailgate, had to use sheet metal screws. Not sure if i could get some nuts sqeezed in the tailgate. Guess I haven't tried. Maybe next spring. I installed some bed stiffners so made less room for the bracket on the bed side. I have to reevaluate. Feel like I'm drilling too many feakin holes.

Yeah. I understand your point. The 3rd gen to 2nd gen mod is cleaner but I really like your mod as well. Plus, you will have empty holes in your tailgate where your bracket used to be. If you go a different route.

The 3rd gen to 2nd gen tailgate assist mod does not require any holes to be drilled, you have to enlarge a couple holes that are already there, and they can't be seen anyways. Also uses factory 3rd gen parts with the exception of the hinge

    It's DLX son!
I did the 3rd gen damper conversion Christian sells - love the functionality with my heavier than stock tailgate.

Be aware the install is a bit more than a bolt-on - you should watch his video to understand the cutting/grinding/drilling required. I pity anyone that tries to do it without a 4.5" angle grinder. :sawzall:

    No problem with tools here.

    @christian06
