I'm hoping to install a bedrail on the tailgate (rear) to match up with the other three sides (left, right, front) and only options I've seen are this one:

    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00DWVN9CK/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza

    And this one:

    https://parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota__...Rail--Side-Panel-Top/66815851/6533504020.html

Apparently the front rail is not compatible with the tailgate. But is the only option to drop $160 on an OEM bedrail?

Which one? You installed the OEM rail on the rear?

Yes it’s just three bolts. The rail will listed as for 2005-2015 Tacoma but it fits

Copy that, so you didn't drill for the other holes, you just went with the 3?

I think there are some un-answered questions here.

OP, You want to put a bed rail on the tailgate? Toyota never made a tailgate bed rail, they made them for the sides and the front of the bed, but not the tailgate. You may be able to adapt the front rail to fit the tailgate though.

I have to ask: why do you want a rail on the tailgate? It isn't a fixed point and it'll get in the way of sliding things in and out of your bed. What about kneeling up there to stand in your bed? I don't know about you, but I'd prefer not to have U channel dig into my patella or tendons when climbing up.

Shit I read you op wrong my bad. I have seen a few people add the rail to the rail gate. They had to drill holes where the rail lines up with the existing bolts that holds the tailgate skin

    ^^This one.

All seriousness, I currently have 3 cargo rings installed on the tailgate. I don't like the way they're installed. I like the idea of having a rail there to slide cargo hooks, etc back and forth. Climbing up on the tailgate and having it (previous truck's cargo rail system) jab into my knee or whatever has never been a problem for me. My only concern at this point will be the drawer for my bed drawer system I made, but in my old truck, it wasn't really an issue, I would just pick the drawer up a bit to lift it over the aircraft seat-track style cargo rail I had on that truck. Same goes for sliding anything else back. I'm more concerned with having the ability to secure a cargo net over loose items in my truck using said rail than any other concerns raised here.

Be sure to remove the OE cap and inner tailgate cover and look over what you are working with so you bolt to something with substance.

You may find one of our vendor tailgate reinforcement products to be helpful in what you are looking to do.
