You forgot to mention that the harness with the OEM kit also includes a new grommet built into the harness so it completely seals the hole from the bottom of the truck to the bed. It's really the cleanest install.

 

Is the actuator base metal for the Toyota kit? I think the one that @KTJO 4x4 sales is aluminum, if im not mistaken.

 

Yeah, it’s attached to a black metal base.

Yep, I agree it’s a nice clean install. I had actually mentioned the grommet in a couple of my earlier posts about the OEM kit. It was certainly the best kit for my needs (OEM, no splicing, and quiet operation), but it’s good that there are also other quality solutions available.

 

I’m wondering why it wouldn’t work with a 2018?

 

I think to each their own. I personally am just excited that Toyota finally stepped up and listened to their customers. They are finally providing this Kit. I wish however that this came stock on the truck as a safety feature since they advertise how often their tailgates are getting stolen. But...you cannot get everything you wish for these days. I will take that they finally stepped up to the plate with a Kit. Thank you!!

 

Well, I've purchased the OEM AND the @KTJO 4x4 locking system. I'm going to compare the two and install the one that I think is better built. Or... I might piecemeal the two together. I like the KTJO version (currently sitting on my desk) because it's forum made and better priced. I also like the separate metal mounting bracket for the solenoid.

I want to inspect the OEM for a few reasons. I like the replacement wire loom bezels, the disconnect at the bed (for potential tailgate removal), the inline fuse and the complete and detailed instructions. I also doubt the dealer would try to blame the OEM kit for any future electrical issues.

I doubt you can go wrong with either version, and I should have no problem selling whatever version I don't use.

Has anyone heard the KTJO lock compared to the OEM? Which one is quieter (less violent). Maybe someone with the KTJO lock can run to the dealer and check out a truck with the OEM lock.

On the other hand, the reason I've never bought this mod for my truck from the manufacturer pop&lock is because of the actuator, its SOOO cheap to purchase by itself that makes me wonder if is any good on a long term. One thing I would hate to do is replacing the actuator over and over b/c is a piece of junk.

I have a similar one I installed that’s been going for several months with zero issues. Super easy to put together and install.

 

In the Toyota lock kit is the actuator it self replaceable ? In case it fails does that mean you need a new kit ?

 

I would assume there's some kind of warranty on the Toyota OEM lock.

 

That would be a good question for the dealer, they may have a separate part# for the actuator by itself. However, you do have a full year warranty for the whole kit!

 

The dealer is telling me that their computer says the OEM part only fits 2019 and newer. I assume there are no differences for the 2017. Can anyone confirm this?

 

I believe that it would be a plug and play into your 17 model with no problem. All people (16-19) who has bought the pop&lock and the one from KTJO4x4 have the same harness pins into the kick panel.

 

The chances of this part failing are very slim. OEM door actuators are rated to last several years. Having installed this kit myself, the OEM part is very high quality and is using a metal base, etc. Any worries about this part are overblown IMO. I'm not saying a failure is impossible (anything mechanical can fail), but I wouldn't be worried at all about using an OEM quality actuator.

And yes, I'm sure you can order just the actuator from Toyota if that ever did happen. Would take 10 minutes to replace it. The tailgate harness plugs in at the actuator so it would be a simple matter of unplugging that and it's a single bolt to remove/replace.

 

It does say in the instructions that it is only 2019+ but I can't think of any reason why it wouldn't work. I suppose the one reason could be if Toyota modified any of the pins in the wiring in that passenger side footwell area, but I'd be surprised if they did that. I'd recommend doing what I did with my 2020. I connected up all the harnesses and actuator and tested it plugged into the passenger side kick panel before installing. I did this to ensure the actuator worked before I opened the tailgate and started running harnesses under the vehicle, but the test would also show if this kit will work on a 2016-2018. Then the kit is still returnable if for whatever reason it doesn't work.

 

Just received my OEM tailgate lock actuator kit. Below are photos of the OEM wiring connector (at the kick panel) and the @KTJO 4x4 wiring connector. Someone more savvy than me will need to say whether these are equivalent. Otherwise, I'm just going to plug the OEM kit in and see if my truck explodes. FYI, the OEM solenoid wiring is red and green.

It appears that there's some wire color trickery that's taking place at the (2) inline fuses

 

I think it's a dealer added accessory only, at this time.

 

I installed similar actuators on my old Frontier in 2003 on all 4 doors and tailgate when i bought the truck second hand and till this day, all the actuators still work on the truck (my brother-in-law now owns the truck). If installed correctly and the actuator arm that goes up and down isnt installed where it pushes too much pressure at an angle, they last forever. I had one installed on my older corolla in 1988, that one broke twice because of the angle I installed the actuator. Once i fixed that, it never broke again and i had the corolla till 1997.
