in my opinion (just an opinion, take it for what it's worth), a tattoo should be very meaningful to the wearer, as you've said. if there's any doubt in your mind about what you should get, then it seems that you haven't found anything meaningful enough to be worthy of a tat.

Just a bunch of old crap
Never get a tattoo unless you say "hey, that would make the perfect tattoo for me". Getting a tattoo just to get one is the biggest way to regret it in the future. Never shop the pre-made tattoos - always get something custom. Just my useless opinion but that's how I got the 2 that I have and I have no regrets years later.

if you dont want it to be random then come up with your own idea! haha

that's the worst when I see people that just "pick" something off the wall at a tat studio or say, "just give me some tribal"...

    +1 to what david said

If you don't have something meaningful in mind i suggest you wait. And if you do come up with a design get it drawn up exactly how you want it to be and the right size. What I suggest you do is hang it next to your bed and try to imagine it where you want to put it every morning when you wake up. Do that for a month or 2 and if you still like it then get it done.

I won't say I regret mine but every now and again I look at it and wonder if it was a good idea. With that being said I still think I want a few more but I will be waiting a few years and putting more thought into them.

Edit: Make sure you ask around to find a good artist and then do your own research to pick one. Look at their portfolios and if you can check out the actual tat after a year or 2. Talk to the artist and see if he loves what he does. The guy I went to (won't mention a name) seemed bored and was just trying to get it over with. I should've taken his attitude about tattooing into account and left b/c I think someone who loves the art will do a better job. Price shouldn't be a factor. You've heard it before and its absolutely true that his is going to be with you FOR THE REST OF YOUR LIFE whether it looks like shit or perfect.

I have a thing about tattoo's. I don't want anyone else's artwork on my body other than mine. I'm not the best artist, and I ask for suggestions from the parlor but in the end I do the artwork and they do the work. If I hate it I only have myself to blame lol

    Yes.
I have a decent amount of ink. All of my tattoos are a bit random looking, but they all mean something to me...

My favorites are portraits of a couple of my dogs that have passed and a Himalayan (himmie) rabbit portrait... I do have a couple Toyota tattoos, as well. ;)

Tattoos should definitely mean something to you. Do not just walk into a shop and pick something off of the wall to have on you permanently...

    I agree

Dont do it unless you know you really, really want it. You might just get addicted. I think that the only reason my body isnt covered is b/c I think about it for a really long time. Im talking 2-3yrs. Im working on a sleeve and you have to know what you want.

Do this one thing. Everyone will be asking about the meaning of your tattoo. What are you going to say? Next. take a Sharpie Marker and draw the dang thing. someone will be willing to help.
