We have decided to build a 4x8 tear drop for the family. Frame is a utility trailer from Harbor Freight and it will have 3/4 sides and likely an aluminum roof. I'm looking for windows and will likely use cut out as door and put trim around it.
I put the trailer together Sunday and welded on it last night. The trailer folds in half and has 6 bolt holes to help support if you don't want it to fold. I installed those bolts and welded the center beams together. I also welded the corners on top and bottom for extra support. Once I get the plywood on the floor it will take out some of the flex.
I will put the original axle under it to get through inspection and see how it does. If the tires are too small I'm going with larger axle and 5x4.5 lugs so I can put car rims/tires on it. (may need spacers but there are easy to find).
I'm going to rough it all in to see if it needs to be insulated or not as we will have 4 people in there. Wife and I will sleep on the floor and we will build a loft/bunk bed for my daughters that will fold down so we can have the whole trailer to sit/relax if needed. Not putting a battery in for now but can later as the bottom of the trailer will be open.
It will like similar to the finished camper photo I attached.

Got the floor bolted down and used 2x2 screwed to the floor to hold sides on. Put a piece of plywood across the front to help flexing side to side and liquid nailed everything together. Next is putting in rear storage area and kids loft area to sleep.

Got some good work in this weekend. We built the back storage area, roof on and bunk bed made. The bunk ben is 5 feet long and folds in two so it sits on top of the storage area so we can have the whole trailer if caught in a storm. We will stain the inside/sides and varnish the entire outside to weather proof it.

Door cut and inside sanded. We will leave beams exposed for now and can do insulation if needed later. Next up are windows.

Homemade windows installed and trim around windows/bottom will be next. I will do baseboard trim around the bottom of the sides to cover up some or all of the trailer.

We got the windows and door trim, the rear hatch installed and three coats of stain. The transparent stain is tough to apply as it shows light/dark areas so we will probably do two more coats.

That is my daughter and she loves helping. She was underneath it later with a wrench and hammer "fixing it."

What are the plans for the rear compartment? Just going to be storage, or going to be built like a galley kitchen as well?

It will be storage. Put totes full of pots/pans, gas stove, gas bottles and portable toilet so it's ready to go at moments notice. We will keep sleeping bags and tent inside the camper for storage also. Everything now is on a shelf in garage so we won't have to pack it all up and we will have plenty of room in our truck or Grand Cherokee for food/clothes.

Around $1000. I'm on track for that with the aluminum sheets I need to buy. That was our budget and we will be close to it.
