my buddy and i have been working on his 4runner for a good bit now and cant fix this clunking/ticking sound coming from his rear drive shaft.

he just installed front/rear auto lockers and now his rear driveshaft is ticking/clunking we think is is unbalanced but we've tried several bolt up variations. at higher speeds ranging from 60-80 he has a low humming. its not LOUD but its easily noticeable and most likely is coming from the drive shaft.

some other things you should know is that it only ticks/clunks when it is in drive or reverse and will IMMEDIATELY stop... weird huh??

    im stumped...

many auto lockers make ticking/clunking sounds when turning. As for the humming sound, it could be the gears making noise.

That only explains the clinking, the humming is their mating call

we just flushed his rear diff.

    still humming...

the clunk is coming from the transmission output to the driveshaft yoke.

When you swap gears do you have to adjust any backlash between ring and pinion or do they usually come ready to go? If there is too much backlash there could be humming. But I've never swapped one out on a toyota.
