I'm thinking about re-gearing in the future. Most likely would run 33's and from the research I've done, 4.56 seems to be the way to go. I'm supercharged too but I just don't want any performance loss at all if I go up in tire size. Any loss in torque / power will bother me. I also tow a boat and would like to make that as easy as possible on the truck.

What are the con's to re-gearing other than cost and arguable fuel mileage loss at faster highway speeds? I guess the thing I'm most concerned about is durability. Would anything be more prone to failure? And I presume any factory warranty on drive train would then be voided?

Sub'd. I'm considering 4.56's as well and would like to see what others have to say.

buddy @snowsk8air2 just did 4.56's on his SC'd taco. Currently running Load range E 285/75E16 duratracs, full front bumper, sliders, rear bumper. He picked up ~ 1.5mpg with the gearing change and his giddy up back

if you are going to do it 4.56's would be the way to go.

Here's my thread from when I did it. It gets totally hijacked towards the end with ridiculousness. So much so that I unfollowed my ow thread... But there should be some helpful stuff at the beginning
    https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/this-weekends-project-re-gear.409086/

FWIW, I love my 4.56's with the auto trans. I also now have plate bumpers, winch, sliders, armor, bed cage, tools, etc on board. It would be unbearable for me to drive the truck without the Regear.

Make sure you take it to a reputable shop that has experience doing gearing. And even then be prepared to have a little gear whine noise.

So if I was to buy a full 3rd member built with the 4.56's, is it essentially bolt it up, fill it up, and go?

4.56 with auto rolling temporarily on 33's but will switch Back to 35's again soon. Night and day difference for me and I regret not doing it sooner.

Yes sir. Te front diff is a little more tricky than the front. But yes, pretty straight forward.

Now would also be the time to add a locker/lockers if you're ever going to. ECGS installs lockers without any additional labor charges if they're building the Diffs for you.

I've been looking at the locker option. Anyone know anything about the Detroit Autolockers?

Only on the differentials. They 'may' be touchy over axles too, but everything else should be fine.

Just go ARB. Mechanical lockers get old quick on the street. I had one. Went to ARB when I regeared front and rear. Never looked back

FYI, if you don't already know, ARB air lockers are the only selectable lockers available for our trucks.

Thanks for the replies, why didn't this thread update on my damn Tapatalk?...

Anyway, don't know that I really need the additional locker. My truck has the stock off-road electric rear locker - could you run an ARB in the front and keep the e-locker in the rear? But then you'd need to also add the pump...so that's like $900.00 for the locker and an additional few hundred at least for the pump? I don't wheel enough to justify that.

I was reading that you could do a limited slip diff in the back though? That's intriguing to me and would have more real world application.

Absolutely, you can keep the factory E-locker and go ARB up front. The small compressor is only like $170. ECGS discounts it as part of the package though

There's also 4.10 gears if you won't be going all the way to 35's. I've read a few threads where guys with 4.56 and 35's wished they'd gone 4.10. If you've got the SC, you'll have plenty of power for it.

I've got 4.88s and 35s, but I has manual a d 4 cylinder... still love it truck felt like stock again afterwards...I ran the 4.10s for a week and it wasn't super awful but I lost 5th gear which sucked. . I did the 3rd swap and replaced the front diff with the regeared and locked one. I use my lockers a lot now surprisingly. They also get me into trouble
