That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

Yeah, using them on your vehicle is not considered life safety, and if stored properly - dry, out of sunlight, not soaked in diesel or water, they can last decades with very minimal degrade in their physical properties Understanding their application, limitations, and some force vectorphysics calculations makes all the difference between a successful recovery, and oh shit moments.

This isn't MA, but sorta on the same topic. I came across it on YouTube and thought it was a nifty piece of gear.

Also a good template for OP and his video. This one was well done.

Seems like there should be a way to do the same thing without the extra piece of gear. In climbing (one of the rescue guys should chime in here if I'm wrong), you would just clove hitch the line to your anchor. Then you can easily adjust the length. I don't think that would necessarily work here because of the synthetic line and the high loads.

Yeah, I bet the high load would just seize that knot up and it'd be impossible to undo. That piece of gear wouldn't work for me anyways because my winch extension is the ARB flat strap. The video makes me reconsider that though, because a synthetic winch line extension will pack a lot smaller and be a little more versatile.

yep. Blocking the trail and wasting everyone's time that's stuck behind you is a great way of making friends. All because you have to setup a bunch of snatch blocks cause you wanted to save a little bit of weight and money

The additional rigging would cost more that the savings if you aren’t buy cheap Chinese shit.

true. My snatch block was pretty expensive. And extra synthetic winch line extension isn't cheap either.

Thats great and all, but I just went with a 10K X20 winch for about $600 including the install. I have a remote control for it so I can winch while in the drivers seat. I dont have to worry about setting up extra pulleys, and its only about 70lbs.

Yes, but would you not rather have me demo quantifiable loads (e.g., lifting a known amount of cement) rather than listen to me speculate about what forces I think I previously encountered?

I also have a new-to-me 2nd Gen (moving on from two 1st Gens) and will be switching some things up, so this may give an opportunity to stress test some components to see what fails first.

You can indeed get main lines to break with certain prusik-to-line combinations, and the other commenter was speculating about applying a traditional prusik to synthetic winch line (UHMW), which has melting point of ~135*C, a temperature easy to achieve with truck weight in that setup. I can probably point you to videos or tests of bad main line / prusik combos causing failures in main lines. More common though, the load side of the prusik loop will break underneath the bridge of the prusik with extreme loading.

We come from somewhat similar schools of thought in that I was NFPA operations for rope rescue, and although I don't see truck recovery and rope rescue as the same, I tend to agree with you about mechanical rope grabs.

Winching from the driver's seat. Now that's scary as all get out. You do know which directions things are going if the line parts or you anchor point slips? If I need anyone steering or assisting with the gas pedal I always lift the hood of the Jeep and lay it back against the windshield frame.

Could you detail the situation in which you used a 4:1 MA system with a <3k ATV winch? What vehicle did you extract? How stuck was it? How long did it take?

Personally, I'd rather see a live real-world demonstration. Nobody is saying physics don't work.

No. Nobody here is denying that a small winch can move a truck.

It's the logistics of using this method in a real world recovery situation that I'm curious about. I believe this will be overly complicated and too slow to be considered anything more than a last resort.

I'm still waiting for a list of the equipment you'll be using.

    This..

Go get your truck stuck in some mud, or sand and make a full length video of your procedure. That is the only way to prove that this is a true alternative to a properly sized winch.

I would like to see him winch himself a few feet too. Some situations a simple tug forward is all that’s needed, whereas more often than not, a further pull is necessary.

Meh, dumb thread is dumb. I’ll happily take whatever the biggest winch is that I can fit over some multi snatch block while blocking the trail nonsense.

I think this 10k winch should be sufficient for my Samurai. The previous 10k model works great in the Taco and pulled me right over an obstacle with no bypass. With an ATV winch and MA concoction getting over that obstacle would have taken FOREVER.

Synthetic line bro. I do mostly straight pulls that are at most 50ft, its just that we get stuck in deep mud ruts sometimes. Also, the thin metal from the hood would never stop a steel cable.
