That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

yeah, low CG and nose heavy climbs better. I've since upgraded to velcro straps, and even use a lipo battery now.

The point is not really to change the mind of the OP, but to make sure those who read it (and would potentially follow their lead) know it's a really dumb idea.

Unless you drive an ATV. Then an ATV winch is a great idea.

I know. That's why I have made the comments I have earlier in this thread. I'm mostly referring to anyone who has made up their mind already.

I sure hope no-one reads this thread and decides to go wheeling with an ATV winch and some alligator clamps, pulleys, climbing rope, etc. That would be a good solution if you slid off the road into a ditch unexpectedly, and just happened to have those things in your car for entirely different purposes.

But, to intentionally wander off the beaten path without proper recovery equipment is just wreckless, IMO.

Granted, I have gone running mild trails when I was just getting interested in this hobby without much equipment, if any. But, I went around or backed out of anything that looked sketchy.

Lets put the 8000 pound winch on the ATV because it is there if it is bought and paid for.

Also just to throw it out there, @TomHGZ sort of has a point. In theory, applying the proper formula and tossing in some physics would yield a feasible situation where this could possibly work out. If it had been posed as a question instead of a matter-of-fact statement I don’t think there would have been quite the backlash.

It seems like the mis-step or where he may not have the experience is that in practical applications it’s just not feasible.

This has been covered here and besides that, most of you already know all this too. Why post it then you say? Good question  Maybe just to see if my thinking is correct.

Winch forces are insane and often momentarily spike during the winching process just due to the nature of it all. That alone would push me towards a larger winch.

The environment factors in as well as many have said here. I live in the desert, if there’s a tree around where I’m wheeling it probably isn’t strong enough to winch off of and there certainly won’t be enough to get a 4:1.
I grew up in the Midwest where most trails do have an abundance of useable trees that would make it easier to get that set up, but again, winch forces.

This is the kind of thing that needs its own YouTube video to test it in real life. I want to see what would fail first and the forces that would be exerted.

No SOS just makes this for the 2.5. But I know someone makes something similar for the 05-11s.
