That >8,000 lb. winch is a waste of money.

@TomHGZ what do you think about Hi-Lift jacket winching or Mechanical Advantage winching (snatch blocks and ropes powered by a person)?

Michigan guy here, running a ComeUp Winch for the last 3 years and a SmittyBilt before that. You need to use them…not unlike a generator in the garage. You can’t let them sit idle for a year+ and expect them to work flawlessly. I have never had an issue, just run the line out and spool back on occasionally if regular actual use has been down.

Well, based on my hourly rate and the time I just spent reading this entire thread, I earned enough money to buy a proper >8000lb winch and don't need to save money on inferior equipment. @TomHGZ made a valuable contribution here.

The last two years have gotten me, for starters, a diagnosis of multiple sclerosis, a drawn-out divorce, a new “home” in the back of my truck, and a deer collision with said truck. For a variety of reasons, you won’t be getting your video. Sorry not sorry, but I will explain a little further:

I posted that for the average Tacoma driver, an 8K winch is a waste of money. I am no longer the average driver. I live in my truck, and it weighs 6,000 pounds with a camper on top and my possessions in it.

After hitting the deer, I discovered it was cheaper for me to mount an All-pro knock-off bumper from eBay, than to replace the damaged parts with OEM (including painting to color-match). The new bumper weighs >110lbs. My original argument for weight savings in the front became irrelevant to my situation.

While I was at it, I decided to protect my new home from other drivers by adding a stronger rear bumper (BAMF) and sliders. Weight be damned, home defense was my new priority — my truck is where I sleep at night.

With the current weight of my truck, I would obviously not choose an ATV winch (if I ever get around to buying a winch now), as I had done in the past with a lightly-built first gen. I would also not use a removable winch tray, because I no longer have room in the bed for it with everything else.

Sometimes life changes in ways you don’t anticipate.

    That is all.

    The video is here!

Ok, it's not from @TomHGZ (hope the last year has been better for you than the one before my dude) and yes, that is a 12,000 lb winch on the truck in the demonstration, but Casey LaDelle does it for the people!

Too bad no one makes a utv winch with a drum that holds 200' of 3/8 rope...

    Idea

I've actually been playing around with the idea of putting a table together to compare load vs amp draw vs line speed and build off some (like, 10 year old) comparisons, but the markets flooded with chinese junk and who knows if any of the published stats are remotely correct.

Hydraulic or pto are The way to go if you need a high duty cycle, but are difficult to implement for most.

And as OEMs move towards 48v system, the markets gonna see some crazy pricing for new/compatible winches.

I hav an 8274 that I could modify a cheap utility winch gearbox to fit between the utv winch motor and the 8274 gearbox, but it would be slow.

The 8274 design is nice, because you can substitute a much smaller diameter rod for the drum, which will alter the gear ratio from the original drum size, and trade line speed for increased pulling capacity. Inline winches that incorporate the brake in the drum prevent you from reducing drum size, but if you had a winch with a gearbox located brake you could accomplish the same thing.

But most people dont need a winch (myself included), so as long as a cheap winch doesnt destroy your alternator and battery, who really cares how efficient it is? There's really no impetus to drive improvements, and the markets too saturated with cheap "good enuf" winches to crater development anyway.

I feel that. Alot fo the fancy gearbox winches are gone. Even hydraulic winches are getting phased out, I only see them on tow trucks. With the harbor freight 12k winch for like $600 it's a no-brainer. If it works for Matt's offroad recovery it'll do 99.96% of us. You don't need a winch until you need one or someone else needs one and then they are worth every penny. Usually when its time for the winch something is tight and needs finesse so trying to setup a bunch of pulleys isn't ideal. Also If you've ever pulled someone out of mud you will know just because you truck weighs 4k doesn't mean a 4k winch will be enough due to how that 4k is measured and the suction of the mud on your truck can be alot and it may take 8k or more to get you out.
