This is more of a blog than a thread...but, i just feel like voicing my frustration with Toyota these days!!! The all new 2010 4Runner and the 2010 JF Cruiser are both getting the improved 4.0L V6 with dual VVT--i and roller cams which increase output to 258hp! and while obtaining increased fuel economy. But the Tacoma does not get this brilliant new 4.0L? Why? Because the FJ is struggling in over all sales, so they need to come up with what ever improvements that will aid in its selling better. The Tacoma sells well (very well here in Canada) so why improve somthing that sells? I guess thats how Toyota is thinking. Doesn't seem fair!

    http://www.offroaders.com/directory/toyota/Toyota_PR.htm
    Thats my rant!

    I'm trying to follow along.

You bought an 09' 4 banger and you are upset that they didn't upgrade the following years V-6 model?

If it was something i wanted and had just pulled the trigger on a V-6 (or 4 for that matter) 09', only to see it come out the following year, that would be the bummer, i would think.

In your case, i would think it would be somewhat of a relief not to see it come out the very next year after commiting financially to the 09.

Yeah that would be a bummer. But look at it this way, who wants a 4-runner of FJ anyways? You should be happy with your Taco.

think about it fj and 4 runner sales arent the greatest why would they put a newly improved motor in a truck that everyone wants, if theres a problem with this motor they will have lesser numbers of motors to deal with if put in the fj and 4runner first. next year im sure they will put the in the tacomas, be happy with your 2.7 for now, I love mine!

4.7 has gone the way of the Dodo. The 4.6 is Toiyotas new smaller V8. Its gonna be in the new 4Runner, and there is talk about it going into the next gen Tacoma. :)

I agree with you %100. I'm still saving up to buy my first Taco and felt the same frustration you expressed when I realized what they had done. Don't get me wrong, The Tacoma is still king in my book but why not make the sweet even sweeter. I wonder if you could special order this newer engine in a 2010 Tacoma.

I know the Taco is getting the overhaul in a couple few years but personally I really like the current body style just the way it is. I'd just like to see some more power out of it is all.

I believe they didn't do this with the Tacoma cause in increasing the HP they reduced the Torque which is king in Trucks.
HP doesn't pull loads Torque does. And the more you fine tune an engine the more likely there is less room for error in the inevitability that something does go wrong.

I went to the Toyota website to compare the hp and torque on the FJ, 4Runner, and Tacoma but the 1st 2 are stil '09.

It makes sense what you're saying. Just for giggles I'm curious how much torque is really sacrificed for this new engine.

Apparently I'm full of crap. Checking on consumer auto reports, the 2010 FJ gets 278 ft/lbs.

    Bastards.

Ah well, I'm still happy with my truck regardless.

I agree that it would be cool to have the improved engine but also more parts and complexity can mean less reliability or decreased engine life. Also if the newer ones had a better engine wouldn't that make our trucks worth less?

It's just VVt on the exhaust cam, and roller rockers which are more reliable then the tappet style Toyota uses now? Hardly more complex, I'm sure when Toyota redesigns the Tacoma that engine will be in it. And hopefully that wicked new 4.6l V8 as an option. Think about how many of the "old" 4.0L Toyota has built ready to go into something, they will use up the last of those engines before the Tacoma see's the new version.

=) Also, if this is a "new" engine, I say put it in the other vehicles and let THEM work out the kinks before it is good enough to put in the Tacoma! :D

I doubt Toyota will put out an unreliable engine I'm just saying it could happen. Kind of like the problem with the camshafts of the 5.7 when those first came out if I remember correctly.

Well the current tacoma engines specs on 91 octane gives 283 ft/lbs.

That was the spec on the 2005 tacoma which called for premium gasoline, after that they changed the recommended to 87 octane and the torque rating dropped to 266, but even now in the manual it says use higher octane for optimal performance.
