I am definitely getting the gears, just debating on a tire swap and if the tires will fit as is, or the tradeoffs in moving up. So really a tire swap decision at this point.

I’m on 33’s and want to go to 35’s at some point in gr future. As @Lord Humongous stated above, this topic has been covered several times before, but I understand how the threads can be lengthy at times.

I’ve even ran 265/70/17 (32’s) and it still was fine on hwy speeds. My truck is my DD and I regularly drive 500 mi to from PDX-SEA and the RPM change is neglible (read: not screaming)

I am sticking with stock tire size - gearing for towing purpose - not necessary to run highway speed of 70mph plus. Comfort RPM will determine speed. I can increase tire diameter when and if I want to.

Your gas mileage before photo, that's before the speedo calibration right? Regearing send to be the ticket for these trucks especially with bigger tires. I wouldn't mind those rpms at that speed

    Yeah forget math! That's g@y.

With STOCK trd OR tires, 4.88 gears and auto trans approximate RPM @80 mph is 2486

With 37s, 4.88 gears and auto trans approximate RPM @80 mph 2113

There's a reason there is only one gear set option for these trucks. 4.88 works well and reliably with smaller tires and adds torque and improves drivability with bigger tires. Due to the smaller pinion with 4.88 gears and the 8" clamshell nitro staight up reccomends a solid axle swap if higher than 4.88 ratio is needed. With that said if youre running anything less than 37s and wondering if 4.88s will be too high the answer is no.

Tire weight and rolling resistance will also affect ability hold OD gears so I'm definitely not saying 4.88s are enough gearing for a heavy 37 either. Still probably saying bye bye to 6th unless headed downhill

Based off of the 35s and 4.88s on my 6MT. At 70mph I am at 2350 RPM, at 80mph RPMs were 2500. If I was on stock tires, I would be up around 3k RPMs at 70. With 37s (37x12.50R17 MT2s) which I test fit and drove last week, RPMs at 70mph were 1900 and 2200 at 80.

So does anyone know when the 4.88 shortage will end? I’ve contacted ECGS and Rouge Offroad and both don’t have a shipping update. I’m fixing to have tax money burning a hole in my pocket.

Just got my gears from ECGS installed today, my installer ordered them December 15. My guess is they are having a problem with having enough cores.

By doing this, how much of the Toyota Factory Warranty goes down the drain? "Drive Train"? "Engine?"

Its getting bad, Im almost broke.
The only thing it would void would be your differential as its no longer factory inner.

Yes, they are having issues with 3rd gen cores. I ordered mine Dec 27 and was told that the 2 week wait is actually at about 45 days

I plan on just going to ECGS and having them do it mainly because I don’t trust anyone around here and I’ve never been to the east coast.

I’d love to have this done to my taco. Sadly I don’t trust very many mechanics to do this. Too many bad experiences alone on my tacoma.

Anyone have this done in Canada? And can recommend a shop in AB/BC

Just installed 4.88's here in Portland Oregon. So far, so good. Very happy with the new driving experience. Nonetheless, Bad news and Good news: First the bad: I purchased all the gears and bearings plus a rear ARB locker from ECGS in North Carolina. My installer (Six States Dist.) called after a day and a half indicating the the front R&P clamshell setup was not working with the OEM carrier of my Tacoma. ECGS had sent the wrong part: T8CS-488RT-NG for a 3.73 case rather than the 3.91.
Now the Good News: ECGS acknowledged the mistake and sent via overnight FedEx a free carrier that worked (Tacoma part #: 41311-35120). Wonderful warranty and customer service by ECGS.
The differentials were setup by a real professional workman (Mike) that has this artform down cold. My highest regards for Six States for the installation.

Prior to all this, I sent the two sets of gears to ACG Enterprises in Oklahoma City for REM's revolutionary Isotropic Superfinish Process. They came back looking like a chrome finish. I suspect that the break in process will be enhanced and easier with this service. Service at: 8600 S. I-35 Suite D; Oklahoma City OK 73149; 405-634-8656. $154 plus shipping.

The 4.88 install; rear ARB locker install; and new bushing from ECGS was about $1400. Parts were purchased with holiday discounts at various times. Can’t remember but on sale.
