The 3 quarts is an exchange right? U change 3 quarts drive for a while, change another three, drive and another three? I think the exchange is quicker and probably more all encompassing.

If you do it that way it’s pretty much the same as a full flush. The truck is on when you do a full flush. You unplug the transmission hose behind the radiator and it flows out from there while truck is on and you do the run, drain 3qts, fill 3, repeat until the fluid flowing out is new looking / when you’ve done 12qts which would be 4 cycles

Imo a flush would provide the best exchange of old to clean. I'ma do the 3 at a time method tho.

I am running Yukon 4.88’s in my rig and am very happy with them. Smooth and quiet. Went with them based on the installers recommendation and availability.

Just make sure you measure what comes out exactly and put in the same at each cycle. There is some YouTube videos on it as well

I need to do an oil level check anyway. Probably add the external cooler too.

The 5th and 6th gears in the AT were meant to be double overdrive gears. Essentially for cruising at higher speeds these gears allow the engine to have a good rpm range for towing loads. The transmission will choose 5th gear for towing (depending on speed and weight) and 6th gear when not towing.

Just for the sake of curiosity, how do we know what gear we’re in, if we have an AT?

I’ve never been able to figure it out. Other than to try and count every time the truck shifts.

Can switch to S mode and shift up or down to match RPM. Over time you pretty much figure out what gear you are in based on speed and rpm.

I count too. I can tell between Torque Converter and shifts now after acclimating to shifting. 6th is way more pronounced too with 4.88’s

I've been searching for some info with specifics to towing a travel trailer. my trailer is about 3800lb fully loaded. I tow in 4th gear now with a stock sr5 stock tires. it pulls down the freeway at 55 around 2500rpms no problem. I want to go 33's and deciding between 5.29 and 4.88's . the 4.88's at 55mph in 5th gear would put me at about 1900rpms. 5.29's gear would be around 2050 rpm in 5th. Anyone do a fair amount of towing a travel trailer? are you able to pull it around in 5th like you did in 4th at flat cruising speeds ~ 55mph? If I go 4.88's I can pull in 4th at 55 at around 2735rpm, but this would not be ideal. my truck is very stock not much added weight at all.

Part of the cool kid club, made a trip up to ECGS and had a set of nitro 4.88’s installed in my Tacoma. I’ve been on a never ending hunt of getting my Tacoma where I like it. Finally with the help of OVtune and 4.88 I can finally say that I am happy with the way my truck drives.

They had my truck in and out in a day. Even said they installed a REM polished R&P in the rear for no extra charge.

Ok so going to 33s and wanting to put on extra weight like front bumper tent and bed rack. Is 4.88 going to be able to handle the extra weight or is 5.29 the better route to run in?

If you are going to 33’s and adding weight that is always going to stay on the truck, it seems more and more are saying to go 5.29’s.

Depends on auto or manual trans.

Auto - 5.29 most likely because of the double over drive gears

MT - 4.88 will be just fine

    **assuming you have the 3.5
