Just search 3rd gen Tacoma pin thermostat. You will find a bunch on it with photos. All it takes is a small pin and it will make the cooler work full time. Mine runs about 160-180 most of the time and while towing it will start the cooling before 195 degrees and then cool down a lot faster after a temp spike. I would not advise running a truck during the winter this way since it is important for transmission to operate at proper temperatures and in acold climate I don't think it would ever get there with the thermostat pinned. Good luck!

    Hey guys,

On my next drain and fill of the diffs. Would there be any negatives going from the 85W-140 to the stock syn 75W-90? Not necessarily Mobil 1, but perhaps amsoil severe gear or Lucas if I can find it? Just wondering if I have to stay with 85w-140 for the life of the gears. I live in Idaho and it gets cold in the winter and hot in the summer

No need for 85W-140 in the front for sure.

75W-110 in the rear and 75W-90 in the front.

Interesting. That stuff is expensive and harder to find. What would you recommend for brand and getting the 4.1 quarts for the best price?

I can get the 75W-90 for ~$13 and the 110 for about ~$15 in the squeeze pouches.

It happened this weekend; Nitro 4.88s are installed in the 2020 TRDOR and I did the 60 mile drive home last night in the cold and black ice. My installer (master mechanic from the 4x4 club) did a 10 mile initial test run then let it cool for the better part of the day. I managed to make it about 6 miles until I found someone off the road in the ditch so I pulled over and did a recovery. Drove another 3 cycles of 10 miles with 15 minute wait in between, and finally about 20 miles at 50-60 mph the rest of the way home.

I noticed my tank average mileage increasing during the entire trip, and it has no problem holding 6th gear. Also, I'm just running 265/75/16 Grabber ATx tires. Looking forward to switching the oil at 500 miles and getting her out on the snowy Minnesota trails.

If I did a BUNCH more off roading or had a AT I would go 5.29, and trust me, it's tempting.

BUT comparing the 4.30 v 4.88 for the MT here: http://www.grimmjeeper.com/gears.html

4.88 just hits that sweet spot, the roads I take and knowing the start of the power band v MPH.

I ordered the gears direct (veterans discount) and the installer is a member of our 4x4 club and does diff work for many members. It was a superb deal in the install and some extra Christmas money for his kids.

265/75/16s General Grabber ATx, stock suspension, and Nitro 4.88 gears. I have about 250 miles on the new gears and did some before an after testing. Driving a fixed route, early morning (to the gym) on a primarily highway route at 60-65 mph with rolling hills and in the same (winter) temps using Shell 87 from the same case station, here's what I've noticed:

    OEM gears: 15.4 & 15.6 trip mpg
    Nitro 4.88 (during break-in): 18.1 & 18.2 mpg

    I'll take that!
