I’ve regeared two Tacoma’s with 4.88 gears. My first was a Pro where I was running 32” tires along with sliders, armor, and winch and front bumper. Thought the 4.88 gears was about perfect. Had my OR Tacoma regeared last summer but running 33’s now with basically the same setup but honestly wish I would have gone with 5.29 gears. Still way better than stock but I think 5.29 gears would work even better. If I ever regear again I will definitely be going the 5.29 route.

Yes. Also had a Pro manual but there isn’t any problems with the gearing in the manual.

Well I can tell you 4.88 in the manual is completely and utterly awesome. And with the 2.0 FOBPremium tune I get near 19mpg around town. 4.30 is just OK, and didn't need 5.29 (although that would have been a torque monster!!)

With that tire size and 4.88’s I’m at about 2400 rpms in 6th at 80 with the AT

I bet it is nicer for sure! But regearing a manual isn’t a requirement to me. But I can’t see how anyone with an AT can live with it without regearing. First mod I would recommend to anyone with a 3rd gen Tacoma unless you keep it completely stock and stick with 31” highway tires.

What are your rpm’s at 70? Am running super fob 2.0 and enjoy it but still yearning for more
    Torque under 3k rpm.

Are you able to cruise at that, and stay parked in 6th without downshifting to 5th or 4th?

Absolutely. It cruises very nice and smooth in 6th and only shifts to 5th or 4th on hills depending on angle and speed desired. I am OVtuned though

500 miles on truck since new gears, but very limited 4wd. What is the consensus on front diff break-in and oil change?

Had the same questions so I called East Coast.. They told me to use 4wd a few limes, make sure to engage and disengage.. Also to run the locker on and off as well. After that - Change both front and rear at 500 miles..

As I have ECG gears, I'm following their advice for warranty reasons.

Hey guys I’m getting 4.88’s and adding an ARB to the rear of my SR (8”). I’m supposed to supply the locker for the shop to install and I’m wondering if someone can confirm the carrier bearings I need? I ordered the locker at a discount from a website that doesn’t sell the bearings and I’m having a hard time finding a site that will sell the bearings separately. Apparently the ARB uses a 50 mm bearing. I have a 2019 V6 Auto without factory e-locker. This is the one I came up with:

    https://www.justdifferentials.com/CK-TV6-p/ck-tv6.htm

    any ideas?

Shop cannot get them? I would let them take on that responsibility even for a slight mark-up on the bearings...............I might be confused, don't remember what is actually needed.....shop supplied mine.

I’ll call them tomorrow. The shop that’s doing the gears is installing the locker for me at no cost so long as I supply the locker. From what I know, you need to replace the bearings when installing the ARB because I think it’s journaled for a different bearing size than what the OEM bearings are — meaning you can’t reuse them. Shop might have the bearings or they might not so I’m just trying to give them exactly what’s needed to avoid a headache.

You must. It would make a real loud unhappy noise if differential gears didn't match.

Are those any torque specs I need to apply to some bolts, if so where can I find them? (mostly worried about the drive shaft)

Update for people with the 8” diff that want to install an ARB air locker in the rear:

The air locker is journaled for a different size carrier bearing than what is currently on the truck. I have confirmed that this is the bearing you’ll need

Pulled this this weekend with full bed and water tanks. 4,000lbs or so. 4.88’s pulled it fantastic with 255/75/17’s. Averaged 12-14.5mpgs (68 miles to a quarter tank). (Also OVtuned) very fun weekend! Gears make the truck tow SO MUCH BETTER.
