How much should I expect to spend for install? I'm in Gilbert and was considering SDHQ.

Why would the 4cyl be recommended to run at a higher rpm than the 6cyl or smaller gearing for sure?

Lower gearing isn't just "running at higher RPM". Frankly I don't know that 2.7L 4 engine, for a gasser NA 4, it must make decent torque. What lower gears do (basically/mainly) is get to the engine power band much quicker. Real, usable power to the ground more rapidly allowing a gas engine to breathe so to speak.

So since the 4cyl has less power it needs more gear? I get the same calculations for RPM whether it's a 4cyl or 6cyl. I thought RPM is basically based on tire size versus axle ratio. No matter if I have more or less power, that should only determine how fast I reach those RPM's right?

Yeah, I'll never go with their company again for any products. Nor ever recommend them to anyone I know or on the forums. Bought on April 24 during their sale. Still have not received anything but a "swag pack" with a shirt, some stickers and a patch to apologize for the wait. Absolutely ridiculous... Contacted by the owner 2 weeks ago that the parts would ship last week and still nothing.

Yes, in simple terms. Why would you leave power and load out of the hard or soft calculation? If power didn't matter then this thread would not exist. If Tacoma had a 800ftlb 900HP V-10 we would not have this thread. We could run a lawn mower engine with 2.10:1 gearing.-yeah won't work..............say make that gearing 100:1 you could move the truck slowly......see?

My truck has a 4.30 gear from the factory, and I run a 265/70/17 (31.6" tire). I plan to even run a URD SC kit in the future to add that missing power that the V6 has already. So eventually I will have power and torque equivalent to the V6, though on a platform that is capable of being more efficient if I choose to keep my foot out of it. That's why I am leaning towards the 4.88 gear. I have been told by more than one person that the 5.29 would be better for the 4cyl because it is underpowered, though I have not given all the information about the plan for my build. I want a truck that has the available power but is still versatile, and that's why I am concerned about running 2121-2773 RPM's @ (65-85mph) with 5.29's on the highway. 1956-2558RPM @65-85mph with 4.88's seems a little more reasonable for that small motor, especially with the added power of the SC. I just want to do it right the first time, and I believe there are enough knowledgeable people watching this thread that could give me advice based on the build I just mentioned Thank you.

I heard this too. When I called into Nitro they explained this size difference to me. They said the OR actually has a large size or maybe they said a large diff size. I can not fully remember. Have you had an update on this since you posted?

I have a TRD OR MT and have 2 set of wheels and tires, a stock set (265/70r16) for road and a set of KM2s (255/85r16) for dirt. I know the stock diff gearing is 4.30.

I'm looking to regear to 4:88s. Anyone have any experience with stock tires and 4:88 gears? I'd like to know the affect on MPG.

I know the motor runs at like 2350rpm at 70mph stock.

Yo guys just wanted to throw in my 2 cents on the 4.88 regear. I have a 2019 TRD sport that I got regeared a few months ago. I’m running 275/70/17 Ko’2s. Honestly was not worth the 2500$ and I would just save the money and pay for forced air when it comes out. Did it help, yes but it was not a 2500$ difference. I live in denver and drive to the mountains constantly. Im still superrrr revd out on the passes anytime i even have my dirtbike in the back and my gas milage went from typically 18mpg to a typical 16 now. I’m so over this truck, thing makes me furious when its sitting at 4000 rpms just to barely do 65mph over vail pass only hauling a dirtbike.

Most people go 5.29 for AT. 4.88 for MT. In your hilly area, 5.29 for sure. Mostly explains why you don't feel it.

5.29 and OVT are the key, frankly.

yeah I just went 4.88 with a an AT, I was thinking the 5.29 would rev too high. 4.88 feels good, but for no way 5.29 would have been too much. At 80
On the freeway I’m at like 2500 rpm’s

5.29 would be wayyyy to much with my tire size, 4.88 almost is too much when im doing 80. Is the ov tune really that good?

All trucks rev high on vail pass, it’s one of the longest and steepest interstates ascents in the country...

If you are struggling to drive in Colorado you might have been better going 5.29.

It may be your driving habits as I’m getting better mpg with lower gears, larger tires, and significantly more weight.

I am sooo tired of the gear hunting in my taco... I am thinking it’s time to re-gear and correct the issue. The truck weight is only going to get heavier. I’m running 255 / 80 17s

I’m not planning on going larger than 33” tires so I’m thinking 4.88s are the way to go... do any recommendations in the Co Springs area?
