Will do, getting them cryo treated and micro polished so it will probably be a month before they are in.

Mobilegear installers is where im most likely going to be doing my re-gearing since its very close to where i live.
However im debating between 4.88 or 5.29 gears

I have a 2017 TRD Offroad 4x4 manual transmission and from the sounds of it from this thread i should go with the 4.88 gears for the Manual.

As of right now my truck has all of this:
    -Steel rear bumper
    -demello DOM rock sliders
    -prinsu rack
    -28575R16 KO2s.

If i add full on skid plates to all of this would 4.88s still be enough? I will most likely also be getting a bed shell later on and strongly leaning for 35s(31575R16) after these KO2s are done.

How much does an OVTune cost?

I have a steel high clearance bumper, steel sliders, a Victory 4x4 rack, and 285's just like you. 4.88's work great -- if anything I'm a bit over-geared so extra weight will help. The gears shine when I tow. I don't think you'll regret the 4.88's.

Thanks, exact response i was looking for since it sounds like your tacoma is carrying similar weight as mine minus the towing. Since i dont Tow at all 4.88s sound like they'll be good for the 315's later on as well.

How is your MPG without and with the towing and what was it before the re-gear?

Yeah exactly my thoughts -- the plan now is to step up one tire size (34's) just to get the gears matched properly.

MPG without towing is around 17 and with towing (1,000 lbs) it's around 13-14 depending on head wind. I gained maybe 2-3 MPG after doing the oil swap following break-in.

    Right on.

Who’d you order from? Are they doing the cryo and polishing? Just curious. Haven’t found anyone to do the cryo yet.

I got revolution gears and had a friend order them cause he gets a deal. I’m going to have cryo science in Wilmington, Ca do the cryo. I was going to have cryoheat do the cryo and polish but not for $239.00 per set of gears.

Haven’t heard of Revolution Gears. Everyone seems to go Nitro. You know many people that have used them?

$239 per set does seem steep. You have Revolution do the polishing? How much for the cryo? Guess I could just ask them. LOL

Revolution are a Cha gear, which more than likely comes from the same place as nitros it’s just repackaged like Yukon, motive and many manufacturers do. I believe they rem polish the gears but you have to take them elsewhere or get them shipped to someone who does cryo. People don’t realize there are not many gear manufacturers most come from the same place and get repacked, so most the time you’re paying for a box and possible some more shims and better master kit but that’s about it. I literally would have paid another $300 for just having the box say nitro.

And this is why forums like this one are great. Thanks for the knowledge. I’ll definitely do some more research. I’ve noticed that Nitro does come with a premium. Thanks, again for all the info, Brandon.

Anyone without added weight and close to stock tires sorry they didn’t go with 529’s..?
I have an aluminum front bumper, sliders and will b installing a 2.5 fox lift soon but sticking with stock OR wheels and 265/75/16 tires.
    16 TRD OR DBLCB
No plans on bigger tires or more weight with mostly city and freeway driving with occasional off-roading in the desert and mountains in so cal.

In a smilier situation, truck currently has 31.5's (265/70R17) and I might step up to 33's in a year but no bumper or racks. Towing a ~4,000lb trailer in the summertime weekends with occasional off-roading in the desert/mountains. A lift and 33's might be in the future but will have to wait at the moment. 4.88's sound like the way to go but can anyone confirm?

Also, anyone have recommendations for an installer in SoCal?

    Thanks

Just confirmed my order today for 4.88's
    I believe they are yukons.
Gonna give this a go and try and make the truck a keeper. 2018 TRD Pro AT with 275/70/16's
About 31" tires. No extra weight except small trailer occasionally.

Ive been running 4.88 for about a year now, I have not regretted my decision at all. I take my truck in road trips and do some wheeling on weekends. Very Happy!

Got the appointment for 4.88's, was talked out of doing REM polishing hopefully thats not a mistake. Installer says I need to do 5 heat cycles, then I can drive the freeway and drain fluid at 500miles, does that sound about right? Read in this thread that some did heat cycles till 500 miles with no freeway driving.
