Didn't get much done the past weekend because I didn't have my truck, parents needed to borrow it the move some lumber for a pergola.

Finally got my truck back today and BOOM first thing I notice... check engine light *%#*! I Pulled out the scanner and it read P0440 so I'm thinking ok gas cap wasn't tightened, I go to check it and see this

    IMG_3311.jpg

Hahha I buy new cap and clear the code. And now it's back to the build

Next, I need to check the kick out dimensions, and compare the CAD to the the real life application. More updates Thursday.

I turned around on my way to work one day with a CEL. Called in sick, ran my scanner, got the same thing, but my gas cap was just on loose. Slept all day since I had been so busy lately. That was the best CEL ever.

Been super busy outside the build sorry for the decrease of updates but it has paided off. I landed an engineering internship in the welding department of a manufacturing company!

Pretty much all I got done was notching, but its one step closer.

Mounted the base of the sliders to the frame for visual fit (not welded to frame)

Glad I decided to go shorter, I'm really liking the fit.

    IMG_3317.jpg

Choose to go with 4 inch spacing on the kick outs, if the notches look gappy, it's cuz this laying on the ground. Everything is actually flush!

I can't remember where, but a video on YouTube said the use a 1 7/8 hole saw on 1 3/4 tubing and you'll get a flush fit every time.

And some test fits for the kick outs with just two supports at few different angles to see what it would look like

Got a little done today, was able to notch both of the bent ends, and cut the extra tubing off the straight ends. Here's a quick look
    IMG_3334.jpg

No welding today, planning on having the kick outs around 15-20 degrees.

Still need gussets and kick ups. I plan on adding the kick ups after the sliders have been welded to the truck.

So school, is eating up all my time... so all I can really do is plan.

With the Sliders are almost done

I've been thinking about the bumper currently, I have the mounting plate and hardware from trail gear thanks to @roosterburm

    IMG_3174.jpg

I plan on picking up the winch mount as well, And building off that
    IMG_3351.PNG.jpg

no designs currently but playing with the idea of a plated/tube hybrid bumper

I wish I had the time to fully fab everything this summer but with a full time internship and another part time job on top of that my time is limited

Gotta tell ya Devin, GREAT JOB!
Watching with interest since I too have a gen 1 taco that needs these upgrades.
I was an engineering headhunter / recruiter and career counselor for many years, and am massively impressed with your skills! Your internship should easily land you a good job (if you are interested in what they are building! :).

Yea, I might as well build my own armor too; looks like fun!
I see that same bender and notcher is for sale on eastwoodco.com website. I'm thinking hard about building my own frame-mounted expedition roof rack from (heavy-duty) aluminum tubing. As strong as the sliders are, seems you could bring vertical tubes down from a roof rack to join the sliders (just behind the doors), and at the rear corners and attach to rear bumper side-protectors. That way, no attachments to the camper shell! I'd like to be able to just remove it when it's not needed.

Are you REALLY a Nerf Gun Master?????

I have no experience with aluminum most tubing armor I've seen on TW and researched was either HREW or DOM. As far as the bender goes I went with jd^2 sure it cost me around $700 with shipping but well worth it. With the better quality, I can sell it when I'm done.

speaking to tools, I'm looking into upgrading my welder, just need to make sure I can tap into 220v in the garage.

Eh, the aluminum tubing will only be used for the top rack is all; no armor. Would at least like something up there strong enough to fit a couple of chairs on if needs come up, and to be able to load up when going camping/offroad.

Bad news, though I don't have a 220 outlet in the garage!

For now, I'm guna have to stick with the 110, so that's means multiple passes when mounting.

Basically what this means is that the sliders will be on but won't be as strong as they could be. So before I actually get to use my sliders on some rocks, I gotta go over my welds with a stronger machine
