So how big is the opening when the mattress is fully laid out? The opening to get in/out of the sleeping area from?

The GFC camper mattress fully extends and touches both ends of the camper. So you have to remove a section of the sleeping platform to enter/exist the sleeping area.

Just wonder how the Vagabond is. Can you purchase one more section and make the mattress longer when sleeping?

Kind of a makeshift solution, but when the wife and I are both camping, I pull the extension and the mattress back a little (toward rear of truck) about 6" or so to lengthen the sleeping area. My feet go into the wedge (obviously not all the way forward because my feet won't allow for it), so it's not noticeable at all when the mattress is pulled back.

When its just me in the camper, I can go full spread eagle so no need to pull the mattress back.

    Thanks for the replies everyone!

The mattress is 80”, or 6’-8”. Standard length of a home mattress.

As others stated, the mattress can be pulled back, onto the optional 12” extension, for more foot space. That leaves an 18” section where you can exit, stand, get dressed, put on your shoes, and use a porta potti in the middle of the night. Without the additional extension, there is 30” of space behind the mattress.

    I’m 6’-2” and a side sleeper. I haven’t required the additional platform.

And full size sheets fit well.

Thanks for the heads up on the sheets, now i know what to buy on the road trip down. Just need to figure out how to keep all my kit from getting stolen out of th back of the truck on the drive down. I should be in the San Fran area next Friday afternoon. Dogs going to hate me but we are pulling some 16 hours shifts on driving to get down there. Leaving Wed night at aroun 5pm.

Anyone have any thoughts on the road trip back north? Thinking of heading east and hitting up US ROute 395 north until I hit the Columbia river, then east to the WABDR (this is debatable and weather dependent, especially on my near dead Cooper STT Pro’s). Thoughts on places to stop/see/go?

Thanks, makes sense to do that and lengthen the sleeping area. I like to fully stretch out and my previous RTT I could not do that so I want to make sure I can fully stretch out without hitting the tent fabric being 6'1. Still trying to decide btw the gfc or drifter.

I would take I5, or something, to Weed (heheheheheh) and then take 97 north. Will take you through some cool rural parts of CA and into Oregon through Klamath Falls, Bend and then to the Columbia. Crater Lake would be about an hour detour off of that between Klamath Falls and Bend as well, and there's plenty of cool shit around Bend like Crack-in-the-Ground (it's like a 1km diameter crater in the ground).

If you're interested I am trying to organize a trip through Southern Oregon/NV/CA around that time and I tagged you in the post. If anyone else is interested as well LMK - trying to do the Applegate Lassen route.

I would look at both in person. I did and revisited my decision

I LOVED going through Weed when I was a kid (we always got ice cream - parents were kind of prude) and had absolutely no clue.....A trip that in include the coast in Northern CA or OR coast would be great if you had the time. We are fans of Ashland and Bend. Crater Lake is worth a detour of course the are the Tetons....Probably a great drive home for you aaen, regardless of how you go.

It started with not wanting the whole top filled in with bedding and wanting to see the canines down below while we were up in bed. Lots of other reasons followed. It seems to me that when you really look at them, they are fairly different. The GFC is less expensive, especially if you want Drifter options (which seem totally worth it). Husband is 6'3". We had a 1985 vanagon and this is longer than that so we anticipate he'll be just fine. Good luck with your decision.

I saw a GFC in person but I have yet to see a Drifter in person. Does anyone live in SoCal and can catch one out for 15 min? Really need to see both to make a final decision.
