Just heat the tape up with a heat gun or a blow dryer before you peal it off and you should be alright. Use some Goo Gone to remove the residue after.

EDIT: Do not use Goof Off.

@Crom the new wheels look great in those photos. I bet u it would of been a night mare in the wind with a roof top tent.

I thought they were the same thing but just different brand names. After doing some quick research, definitely don't use Goof off!

That was some horrible driving conditions, especially when the person you're following only has one taillight :goingcrazy:
That's a sweet spot to hang out and camp! I'll have to take my gf there. About how much is offroading?

Foul weather trips are sometimes the most fun! Looks like you found a lovely camp spot.

I think your trip report just decided me on doing a rear bumper. Have been waffling on whether or not to. I'm trying to stay light and I've noticed that All Pro now has an all aluminum rear bumper than includes optional side protection (it isn't a high clearance bumper). 30 lbs for the bumper, 7 lbs for the side protection. Since I'd be removing the factory receiver and associated hardware this might be a zero weight mod for me. Unfortunately it is far from zero dollars though...

EDIT: I should add that All Pro calls it "high clearance" but I meant that it is not a design that requires cutting which is what I assume most folks on TW mean by a high clearance rear bumper.

    Thanks!!!

I can confirm that Goof Off will help remove clear coat. :anonymous: Good thing it was just a test. lol

Thanks! Love the wheels. Interesting to note, I crunched the numbers and my net cost to switch to the 4runner wheels was $20. I'm not factoring in my personal labor costs, just the cost of acquisition, tire shop labor, and proceeds from sale of OR wheels, old sensors, and steel 4runner spare. :)

I did take a video of the wind and fast moving clouds. Will have to pull it out of the camera, can't wait to see it. In high winds RTT or other high profile shelter may have been damaged. 50-70 mph wind is no joke.

Thanks. I remember your post from last December in the "Installed rear extended travel 5100's(F4-BE5-B110-T5)" thread. It was helpful to my decision to get them.

Love the Dakar leaf pack and extended 5100 combination. They really take the weight and do well on the trail. And even when I'm running light (300 over stock in back) they still perform awesome.

ROFL! You're right. I should not have left my roll of duck tape at home. It's part of "parts" and "fix it" kit I left at home, because, only one night trip, wont need that. Riighhhtttt.

There are tons and tons of places to camp and explore on FS, BLM, and State Park, dirt out there. All of our trip was off-road, locker and ATRAC were used plenty. Not all the trails in the area are like that though, some are 2WD friendly.

Points of Interest, El Centro Office BLM

Thanks Ken. Very much appreciated. I'll look at that.

I really want to know how much the factory hitch weighs. The closest nuber I have is from @zscott who said it's HEAVY!!! lol :)

I have tried very hard since the beginning of my truck build to keep things light. It's the primary reason I have resisted to bolt up steel skids to my daily driver.

I think once I get new gears I'll go ahead and get some skids.

It's crazy how the weight can add up too.
    • 3-hoop front steel plate bumper is 120 lbs.
    • Rear hi-clearance steel bumper is 140 lbs.
    • IFS Steel skid 60 lbs.
    • Mid Steel skid 41 lbs.
    • Rear Trans steel skid 55 lbs.
    Thats 406 lbs! :D

I want aluminum front and rear bumpers, but I think I may go for steel skids. I'm undecided right now...

I think aluminum will work well for you. I believe you've traveled more miles than most and as you mentioned you've only suffered a tweaked bumper and broken tail light. Aluminum front and rear would be you're lightest option and since you don't regularly bounce off of rocks I don't see a problem with the aluminum.

It may or may not have a hitch though if i remember the aluminum ones are not highly rated. But even a steel one with built in hitch weighs about the same as stock.

There are a lot of places you can go, in 4WD, but you can get stuck fast in certain terrain without lockers or traction control.

When my truck was brand new, I took it off-road on a rough trail within 24 hours of taking delivery. :)

I was stunned when I got stuck in 4WD with one wheel spinning on each axle (my first 4x4 truck). I didn't understand how it worked, and I certainly didn't understand ATRAC either. To get unstuck I did the only thing I knew how to do and engaged the rear locker and drove out of the holes I was in.

The yellow wire mod will help you a lot. And if you get into it, and want more, get a locker.

    Thanks.

I should probably go all aluminum and continue to drive like I do (avoid contact at all costs), and when contact happens, let the skid do their job.

That's a good point. And what I really want to know... How much does the stock hitch AND chromium bumper take off weigh?

If it weighs the same or close to a HC rear bumper, I'd gladly go steel, I think. :)

I couldn't tell you exactly but I was amazed at how close they seemed to weigh. stock w/ hitch vs. AllPro with sides w/o hitch.

Might look into this as far as spacers for the superbumps. Or I could add it to the strike plate.

I think if there's one thing you should go steel on it's the rear bumper. The weight difference versus stock probably isn't much and I think you're way more likely to make contact with the ground dragging your ass through something than bottoming out your skids or tapping your front bumper when approaching an obstacle.

im not sure if its close to a high clearance bc u have more metal involved. But its pretty close to the stock bumper and hitch in a regular rear. and u gain about 6-7 inch less lower hang with the hitch moved and bumper slant. plus the protection......also the expo points i think its worth +10

By living in San Diego, you've won the geographical lottery of the world and you don't even know it yet. :)

Free time? What's that?!? All my free time ended when my kids were born. ;)

Thanks. I think I'm getting a 3/8" spacer from wheelers. Just waiting on my friend to buy so I can ride free on his shipping.

It's a tough call. For skids I like steel because they will slide and glide over rocks much smoother than aluminum. For bumpers, I think aluminum would be fine. I am mostly concerned about animal strikes and car accidents.

This is one of my favorite pictures of plate bumper impacts.

This is a picture of @zscott 's truck. It's a steel CBI bumper. Look at the damage caused to the little ranger truck. Zero damage to the Tacoma.

    I'd be like this:

    maxresdefault%25255B1%25255D_8788261eb5d793937d92c304494768bcc3cbce07.jpg
I kinda hate the factory hitch sometimes because it's so low and I don't tow anything, I've dragged it a few times on trails in Death Valley. However, I think it protects the spare tire from some trail abuse.

And yes +10 expo points. lol
