I'm not sure how accurate this is, because it came from my father-in-law, who is very impatient and extremely controlling, but he's also going to play the role of the Finance Dept.

That being said, and according to him (and his 2hr slug fest at the local dealership yesterday) you can no longer "build" a Tacoma from the toyota.com site, and instead have to order/acquire through the Distribution Center, where they will build out packages, but are also limited on what they can get... ex: no more 6' beds in an SR5 model. Has anyone else heard this?

He is pushing pretty hard on an SR, and trying to convince me that they're close enough to the same but with a few different options.

    1. Is there a good site that lists ALL of the features/options of the SR and SR5?
    2. Is there any information on ALL packages offered for both models?
    3. Can you or can you not still build from the site and get all the things you are looking for?
Thank you much in advance! I want to make sure I am getting the best truck that I can get within my budget.

It tells you at the bottom what length bed you can get with which cab and model.

    Oh look, another mod....

First off, how much "finance dept" role is he playing? If it's just a downpayment, then get whatever the hell you want. If he's paying for the entire thing, then take what he offers and say "Thank you".

It also sounds like he met a sales person who don't know what they are doing as well.

Love my SR. You'll be happy either way.

It is true that dealers generally "get what they get" and cannot place an order of exact specs and have it show up. Dealers can trade with other dealers of course.

    I love my SR.

When looking at specs I didn't see a whole lot different between the two models to make the SR5 that much of a step up.

If I didn't get an SR I would have moved up to a Sport or Off Road instead of the SR5.

    OP,

Regardless of the trim model I think you should definitely make sure you get the cab configuration and bed length you want... even if it requires spending multiple hours at another dealership.. those things are pretty much impossible to change.

Borrowing anything from family members is a ticking time bomb. More so when money is involved. I’d much rather the bank hold a loan over my head if given the choice. Especially versus a father-in-law. Ouuffff. Good luck with that.

I really like my SR, though with the 2.7 its on the slow side yet will probably get more miles than a 6 banger... I added a bunch of stuff to mine to make it better in some ways than a sr5...

Focus on the important things like Engine, driveline, body style the rest of the stuff can be added to a certain extent depending on your skill level.

I've always bought sr5's. They just have most everything i've ever wanted, and not regretted it, had gone for an sr. If you buy the sr, and add on options later as the sr5 would already come with, your sr won't be worth anymore that how it was originally built if you decide to sell/trade it to a dealer.

Here is a great PDF with lots of info. Keep in mind in 2016 there was no Pro or power rear windows etc. but you should find this PDF helpful.

Also if you are planning on making the controlling Father-in-law a grand parent, you better get a Double Cab or you will never hear the end of it.
