There’s a big difference between something used as a tie down point and a recovery point. Just like how you can tow a whole bunch of weight off a hitch ball but a recovery off a hitch ball can snap them in half. I mean look at all off-road bumpers ever, none have a weld on ring like that for a reason. Instead they’re some mega thick chunks that get welded on the face, the back, the mounting plate, etc.

Another thing I forgot to mention is angle of the pull. Imagine a perpendicular hard pull, say to scoot a trucks ass over that’d slipped off the trail. The weld on d ring would peel right off.

Stuff that my wife thinks I don't need.
I'll volunteer to test all these theories. I'm bored.

You know i welded my recovery points to the face of my front bumper and have been scared to use them. It was a really bad call on my part.

The giant 1” thicc pass-through ones I got were only $32 shipped. Should grab some for a fun project, and so no one gets taken out recovering you since you do tend to get stuck frequently.

Can you send me a link?

Also, luckily no one even offers to help me out so i've learned to be self sufficient.

Since it’s a tube, I just cut out a hole on the front and back of the tube. Welded it on each side. Then I added a 1/4” plate laterally and welded that all around just because I realllly don’t want this thing moving. It’s ugly but it’ll hold. Probably.

For the front you pass it through on the corner, so that way you can weld it on the front side, and all around the perimeter on the inside.

A long time ago, I drove a tow truck. I watched a guy loading a roll back and the winch cable snapped and nearly cut him in half. It was not a good day.
