The mystery 90915-YZZG2 oil filter cut open

I've been using these since my '15 was new. The dealer used them for the ToyotaCare duration, and I bought half a dozen to get me through the warranty period.

I consider them superior to the Denso made filters which have a reputation for less than stellar filtration. This media is likely somewhere between the standard Purolator variety and the Pure One. It's OK, not great, but the best feature of the filter is likely its thick and sturdy can and very well designed O-ring. It also has a silicone ADBV.

That said, when I'm out of these I'm switching to the WIX 51348. That's a known good filter with published beta ratio.

Wait, the motorcraft FL400 fits the 2nd generation 4.0 engine?
I'm a ford dealer tech and will be very happy if this is true.

The FL-400 has a higher bypass valve setting.

Will it fit, yes. Is it a good idea? Up to you.

Motorcraft oil filters are generally contract made by Purolator.

The 90915-YZZG2 which is what this thread is about is shorter than either and interchanges with the Denso made D1 (or Wix 51348, Fram 3614 variants, etc.).

The longer filters will not work on my 2TR-FE equipped 2015 Base. There's something in the way.

FL-910S is the YZZD1 equivalent smaller sized filters. either the FL-400 or the FL-910s will work on the 2.7L or the 4.0L if you research them

 

WALMART carries both MOTORCRAFT filters for about $3.50

 

Wait a minute... I drive a 2012 Ford Focus and my Dad drives a 2009 Taco, 4-cylinder engine. Are you saying I can use my Motocraft

There are better filters.

It's been said the best oil filter is one that won't fail. Long filters that stick down where they might be impacted and possibly rupture the can don't appeal much to me. Likewise those with thin cans. The Toyota filters use a thick can, as does the Wix. There has never been a proven advantage to using the longer filters instead of the standard length ones.

Blackstone says they can't tell from wear metals and particle counts what oil filter might have been in use. In the real world, it appears to make no difference.

The best oil filter is actually a good air filter. Keep the abrasives out of the intake, and they can't get into the engine oil. Modern engines, especially Toyota engines, make very little particulate matter on their own to filter out. It's the sand that gets by the air filter that causes wear.

Keep the air box tight and clean and use a tight fitting air filter.

On BITOG, the cut open 910s filters look very good. They seem to not display the torn media sometimes found in Purolator made filters.

The Wix 51348 likewise always looks very good. It has a heavier can and most likely better filtration.

The differences are minor, and as stated likely won't mean much in the real world.

This makes changing the Wix filters on the 2TR-FE very easy.

Tip: after loosening the filter just enough so it can be turned by hand, put a large size McDonalds soft drink cup over it, squeeze, and turn the filter off until it falls in the cup.

This works great for a vertically mounted filter and can be done so not one drop of oil goes down your arm.
