Same problem here..my wife has been doing 300 cal a day on the treadmill and eating well. In fairness, her diet was good anyways. She's gained 3 pounds and is so upset about it.

I try to tell her it is normal..she gets angrier because she saw me lose weight fast. A big reason why I did was I drank a gallon plus of Mountain Dew a day, 2000 garbage calories right there..and ate 3 candy bars for a snack which is 700 or so more of junk.

She's really getting discouraged and no matter what I say it doesn't help.

You're gonna have to keep her motivated and encourage her. Everyone is different. That is where most people give up because they expect this drastic change in such a short time but the trick is to keep at it. She may not notice an image change now but in 3 months tell her to look at an old picture compared to how she looks now. She'll see a change. It's also like Zack said earlier, if it's not something she's use to doing then she will gain weight in muscle mass to support her body's new change. Keep telling her that muscle weighs more than fat. She could have lost 3lbs of fat already but gained 5lbs of muscle. I tell my wife to ignore the scale in the beginning because in can fuck with your progress by not seeing the scale go down. The changes are there. It's just a matter of keeping at it and adjusting your routine and diet every so often to keep making the changes happen.

Can anyone give me a "safe" amount I should be squatting for my size? I feel like I might be pushing myself too much. Just a few weeks in doing squats

    I'm right at 179 currently and 6' 3"...

do yourself a favor and don't worry about the weight until you perfect the form. You can really mess yourself up and progress if you're lifting wrong. Have someone who knows what they are doing check your form. Use the bar and when you feel like you're comfortable doing the movement with good form then move up in weight. You shouldn't be doing more than 135 now regardless if you have only been lifting a few weeks.

Exactly what I told her. Sadly, my hope that she would have some inches lost wasn't the case.

I get the argument that I got some results fast, but I was also eating garbage and my intake was over double the calories it should have been..

To speak generally, how fast can one gain muscle?

I'm sure I have some but no idea how much..how would one measure muscle in weight?

    Wut lol

I'd say, naturally, a newb could gain upwards to 20 lbs in a year (2 lbs per month). When I first started, I weighed 140 lbs. In year 1, I jumped up to 160. I'd say about 15 lbs of that was muscle, but I had nowhere near the knowledge I have now, so my gains weren't maximized.

For an experienced lifter, I'd say one can naturally gain up to 10-15 lbs in a year. Of course, it's gonna come with a lot of fat, too.

You can gain a lot of muscle if you're willing to gain fat, too. If you want lean gains with minimal fat, I'd say 7-8 lbs a year would be the max. I usually put on a solid 5-7 lbs of muscle per year. At the end of my bulk in 2013, I weighed 205 @ 14% bf. At the end of my 2014 bulk, I was 210 @ 14% bf. I could gain 20 lbs in a year if I wanted, but I'd be 25% bodyfat and that's not the look I want. I usually cut down to 180-185 and then bulk back up, putting on an additional 5 lbs per year (200 in 2012, 205 in 2013, 210 in 2014, etc.) My ultimate goal is to be over 200 lbs at the end of a cut (around 9-10% bf)

This year, I'm cutting until I get a good visible six pack and am going to do an extremely lean bulk. I get married in Nov, so I wanna be lean for that lol

But anyway, I'd say one can naturally put anywhere from 5-15 lbs in a year, depending on how much fat they're willing to put on, as well

I started off at 5 foot 10, 250 pounds. I'm not lifting anywhere what you guys do for numbers but right now I'm 188-190.

How would one measure it..is there some type of scale, something else, or kinda guesswork?

Just record your weight and body fat percentage. Wait a period of time and do the same again and compare the differences. If you weigh in on Jan 1 at 180 and 10% body fat and weigh in on March 1 at 183 and 10% body fat, you know it was primarily all muscle gain.

Theory is about .05 lbs a week. So maybe if you're doing it
right about 2 lbs. per month.

    Anyone here over on bodybuilding.com?
