While I'll never get where you are, I have to wonder if I could exist there..in large part because I hate a high intolerance for asshattery

I tanned for like a month to make my muscles look mo' swole, but then I read an article on melanoma and tanning beds and gave that shit up. Now, I just go shirtless and wear Chubbies anytime the sun is out  ...with sunscreen, of course

I am not saying its perfect. I just find it funny how quick the bodybuilding community gets upset over it. Yet you guys will bitch about crossfitters ruining your gym. Or complain about rules that are socially enforced being broken. Planet fitness just had the balls to call people out on it. The only things I don't like is that it's a corporation and they don't have squat racks. I would rather see small gym owners get the business.

If you lift heavy weight, grunt and drop weight, then you should probably go to a gym that is based around powerlifting.

If you do crossfit, then you should probably goto a crossfit box.

If you do bodybuilding then you should probably re-evaluate your life. Otherwise stick to gyms with like minded people.

If you do oly lifting then you will probably be at a gym that focuses on exactly that or a powerlifting/crossfit gym that is welcoming to those lifts.

I agree about small business. The gym I worked at and continue to go to is locally owned.

What's wrong with bodybuilding? I'm not trying to compete or anything...I just wanna look good with my shirt off!

And I don't get mad about different type lifters coming into the gym doing shit, I just don't like it when it interferes with what everyone else is trying to do...like when folks do a circuit at 5pm on a Monday when the gym is packed. My gym has all sorts of different people that do powerlifting, competition training, cardio training, etc and I don't care. As long as someone doesn't come in acting like a dick or acting like they own the place, I don't have a problem with them. I agree with PF that grunting and intimidation are annoying and stupid, but they market themselves to try to get heavy lifters to stay away. I feel like the only people PF wants in their gym are fatasses and women who only want to go to the gym to pat themselves on the back and not take things too seriously.

They're like the little league team that doesn't want to keep score because it hurts peoples feelings.

But I only make fun of them in the same way I make fun of Crossfitters...as a joke.

PF found their niche market, and are obviously doing OK sitting in it. Just so happens that in order to enforce their niche, they piss off an entire hobbyist/industry in the process

I just really want to get kicked out of one

Much truth here..finding their niche they did. Plus the low price is attractive and in my case a reason I'd do it versus the Y which is a 3 minute walk from my house.

I do, but if I wanted to join a gym PF at $10-$20 would make more sense versus $50-60 even though the more costly one is 3 minutes away.

I can tone it down if needed, but if I still had my long hair that wouldn't help. I can see it now..PF hears Slayer blasting as I pull in the parking lot, then sees this hairbag walk in weating a Black Flag shirt with my tattoos showing. They'd probably call the police, the loony bin, and a priest to perform an exorcism

Well if you don't compete I just don't get it. It's not really improving anything outside of aesthetics. It's sorta like a guy getting a 6'' DB lift and 37's for his Tacoma. The truck might look good, but does it perform?

If you are going to set aside time during the day to workout, prep food and track your diet, wouldn't you want to improve more than how your muscles look?

    That's the part I don't get.

Well, there's a billion dollar industry built around it, so there are folks who agree with me. However, bodybuilding is a sport in itself. Some people may think it's stupid, but it's more complicated than just lifting weights...just ask anyone who has been below 10% bodyfat. Also, I do care about more than just aesthetics. I care about heart health, as well. I have no desire to run a marathon or do burpees for time. For me, it's about lifting heavy and getting my bodyfat low and gaining muscle. There are benefits that come along with it, besides just looking good. As with any sport, just because you don't get it, it doesn't make it stupid. I'm just trying to convey that there is more to weightlifting than just trying to look great

Meh, I'll just stop. I'll sum up my feelings below but I had an essay length post of everything that is wrong with body building IMO:eek:. I think it has done plenty of good as well. People are just misguided.

I don't mean to offend anyone and I wasn't directing my comments at anyone in this thread.

My main issue is that the "sport" is geared towards doing everything you can so that a panel of judges like you better than the next guy based off looks. The judges opinions decide the winner, not the lifter themselves. That bugs me.

The 2nd issue is that the industry drives this image of a body builder being the "best version of themselves". No, just no.. This got me when I was a teenager and I feel dumb for falling for that.

I understand powerlifting. Lift more than the next guy. Olympic lifting combines "lift more than the next guy" and adds in an additional level of skill needed to perform the moves. I just don't understand the goal of body building outside of it being all about narcissism and vanity.

That said, outside of Sean, I don't think I can call any of you body builders. It is such a loosely used term for categorizing people. 1st day of lifting? Used bb.com workout? Calls himself bodybuilder. Sean seems to be pretty honest about the upside and downsides as well. As long as people are honest about it then I don't care. Just don't try to disguise it as something that it's not.

It's cool that people do it, I can respect it, but I will never understand it.

Did my first log press today. Empty log is #185... pretty cool. Couldn't press it above my head though because my shoulders were just too sore when I tried it. Got the first 2 steps of the lift down.

Incase someone doesn't know what a log press is
