This is a good post! Haha

Let's keep this going if anyone else wants to. What do you wish you would have done from day 1? Ha

So today is marks 2 weeks straight going to the gym. I know that isn't much compared to most of you going for years but I am kinda stoked. This is the first time going with a plan of attack and actually enjoying the challenge of it. I have made sure not to miss days I even went back and finished after a conference call I had for work. Not really doing the supplement thing, just ON protein and I have been eating right as well. I want to stay focused and reach the goals that I have as well. Here is the workout I am starting with and and then switching after the 12 weeks to the routine that Zach suggested 2 weeks ago.

What do I wish I would have done from day 1? Honestly I don't think I would have changed anything. Here is the way I look at staying in shape. The first and foremost thing is to "keep it fun". If you don't enjoy it you will not stick with whatever plan that you have. I was lucky and started racing BMX at 5 years old. Was a "factory" rider throughout my teens and then transitioned into mountain bikes. I am competitive by nature (to a fault) but that kept me driven. I raced until I was 35 and then I broke my elbow and realized that 1: It took a long time to heal and 2: It is much harder to compete with someone half your age. After that I was done with competitive racing.

I was never one to hit the gym because I hate lifting weights. I wish I liked it but I just don't. But I like riding bikes and building them. It's turned into a hobby now and allows me to clear my mind and keep in shape at the same time. It's also fun going to the local track and watching all the younger riders watch a 45yr old man shred the course.

Being a Professional FF for a large city also helps keep you in shape. I need to know that I can be counted on in someones time of need. So I've been lucky in my life that I have been given good health and the genetics to allow me to stay at this level I'm at without much work to keep me there.

Stay active and keep it fun. For me that is my key.

Brah, is your 13 year old bigger than you? :stirthepot: Jk, good for him getting started young. I wish I would have...and let's all be honest, we're all in the gym for girls. If you're not, then you're a damned liar.

    ^ x 10000

    lol all good stuff

Biggest things I wish I knew when I started out:

    1. diet is key. I started out my whole first year lifting 4 days a week and eating probably 1500 calories a day and my macros were all out of wack. I was spinning my wheels, for sure

    2. Supplements are a fucking joke. No explanation necessary

    3. Leg day. I did legs once a month my whole first year in the gym and missed out on some great newb gains

    4. Clean eating is retarded. I remember spending so much money on 'health food' to get yolked. I remember trying to choke down cottage cheese and salads everyday and it was a nightmare. Brb, going to eat some Lucky Charms

So glad to hear you're not taking a thousand dollars worth of supplements. All you need is food and protein powder....hell, you don't even NEED protein powder, but it does make life easier. Good for you, brotha!

I'm the opposite...While I do enjoy going to the gym, I think, to make serious progress, you've got to step out of your comfort zone and get dragged through the mud every now and again. I've had times at the gym where I'm like, "fuck this, I want to go home...now," but I stick with it and it makes me stronger. But, lifting weights is different than biking: I think you've got to do a lot of shit that isn't fun to achieve the goals some want to achieve. Last night, the fiancee and I went to Mexican. It really sucked not getting a beer and a big ass burrito, but that's counter-productive to my goals, so I sucked it up and got some grilled chicken with salsa. Different strokes for different folks.

I don't disagree with that at all. It's the goals you set for yourself and the self control to stick to those goals. I admire that. I never wanted to be "bulked up". It just wasn't my thing. I just want to be in good shape and stay healthy and active. I look at others that are 45 and just shake my head wondering how you "let yourself go"? When did you "give up" and why? I guess it wasn't programmed in my DNA to be that way.

Yup just keeping at it. I am a coffee nerd so I usually just make a black cup of coffee (nice pourover) before I go and that gets me going for the gym. The biggest thing is I just need to eat more. I am already eating way more then I was but I do need to step it up. Going to try to prep a few options this weekend and see if that help me get calories in.

Thanks for the help by the way!

I hear ya on that. Anywhere I go, I'm always examining people and am always like, "dude, how have you let yourself get THAT fat???" I just don't understand folks who are completely sedentary and do absolutely nothing with themselves. I have a friend like that who is 26 (my age) and is already on blood pressure medicine and I'm like, "dude, come to the gym and get in shape and quit eating like shit and you can get off the medicine, be healthier, and not look like a slob", but he won't do it. I love seeing fat folks in the gym and I don't like hearing folks talk shit on them; at least they're starting, which is more than most are doing. Most of the people I work with are quite hefty and they all make fun of me for eating like I do and never indulging with them in the break room when someone brings in a cake or something (which is at least once a week) and I'm like, "yeah, but I'm not fat" and give them one of these:

When I worked out in the morning, I used coffee as my pre-workout, but now that I go after work, I can't. I find it hard to drink coffee at 5 pm lol. I just chug a shot of pre-workout.

Understandable. I work Nights 7PM to 7AM Tues - Thurs every other Friday so afternoon/evening coffee is totally normal haha I am going to the gym before I go to work though. I am hoping my 11 day Bali trip in 3 weeks doesn't fuck everything up. My hotel has a gym so I'll have to work with what I got there.

Anyone else get tired of mixing their Pre, or whatever else you take, and just throw that scoop straight on your tongue and chug it down like a pill? Haha

I think more than anything I would have wanted to know:

    1. Actually have a mentor or someone to show me the ropes. It's just slower progress when figuring out tricks and tips on your own over years. My bro will be set from day one with the ins and outs.

And 2. Why in the world did I listen to my buddy and start taking a bunch of supplements? I started actually lifting in the Corps and the guy who I asked questions took some heavy stuff if you know what I mean haha I took a pre, a protein, all sorts of "other" things that's supposedly help over the first few years and wish I would have just took what really helps – FOOD!

Going to change it today and see how heavy I can go on deads. Probably not a "max out" but I'm just curious. Maybe it was that high schooler the other day, or all you strongmen with your big flashy numbers...

I did tweak both my ankles playing flag football on Sunday so I've been lifting with braces all week. They feel pretty good though. I rode 18 miles on Wednesday and that didn't bother me. I do have to mow the yard after the gym though. I doubt I can convince my wife that THAT is what will hurt them the most...

Has anyone noticed that women are more attracted to them when they appear softer but still strong (think mid bulk mode) v.s. when they are lean and cut?

I have notice a lot more women are interested now that I am softer around the edges. Just an odd thing I have noticed over the summer.

I noticed especially "chubby" women like ripped guys...women in shape tend to like ripped and dad bods :notsure: (not all of them but it seems that way to me)

Ok actually ended up basically maxing on deads. Took me 27:15

    135x5
    185x5
    225x2
    245x2
    275x1
    295x1
    315x1
    335x1
    345xfail
    345x1

I'm happy with that considering that hasn't been my main focus as of late. Even more pumped I was able to get 345 after failing. I usually psych myself out so bad after a miss that I'm shot for the day.

I am not talking about the dad bod. My girl friend and I joke about working on my dad bod but I certainly do not fall under that category. 5'9 @ 215lbs, I am not fat nor small. I have muscle definition still, i just don't rock a perfect 6 pack. I wouldn't consider a mid bulk look dad bod material.
