Also, how many of you guys can Asian squat? Not a lift but squat like an Asian. I want that to be one goal of mine but my ankle flexibility sucks. I'm just wondering how many of you bros who lift can actually do it.

    Picture for reference

Depends on the weight, also never called them that before haha...

I don't go that low with a bar across my back but I do if I am holding a KB or DB or just body weight...

Absolutely. At a minimum, the crease of the hip should go below the knee. That's the reference I usually use. Thats for it to "count" in my book. Which doesn't necessarily mean shit to anyone else haha.

There was a guy in the gym today who set up a box and then he started doing his squats and still quarter repped them and was a good foot away from the box with his butt when he would start going back up, and he had set the box up pretty high already :bananadead:

I dunno if I could physically go down that far because my (and most people who actually do legs) hamstrings should prevent it...that'd be like bragging that you can touch your shoulder with your hand...that's cool and all but my biceps don't allow it because I lift lol.

As far as depth goes, I do make it a point to go below parallel, but eventually my hamstrings are gonna rest on my calves and I won't be able to go any lower.

Edit: just tried it and the lowest I can go is about catchers position:

^^^that's also about the same depth I go to when squatting. For the past couple months I've really started focusing on depth and weight distribution and other form issues when squatting and my max reps have decreased because I was kinda shortchanging myself. Anyone can half squat, but doing a full ROM separates the men from the boys.

I was joking about going as low as Asian squat (no offense @tacopaulo), but I think everyone should go as low as physically possible when squatting, unless you're in a competition where the standard is parallel or just below. Yeh, you can move more weight half-squatting, but you nailed it when you said you are shortchanging yourself. You're not getting the full benefit of the exercise.

I'd take low bar 1/4 rep pin all day right now. But trying some front squats today. I don't go to full "Asian" or catcher status. But I go as low as I possibly can until I start feeling like my right knee is gonna say screw you tubby I'm out.

Good shit man! I suck at front squats, which is weird, because my back squat is very quad-dominant. Everyone has their own limitations, which I understand, but if you don;t go as low as you can, well that's just copping out IMO (not saying you aren't going full depth, if your knee says fuck you, bail).

Yep. Before I started going as low as possible, I was still going to parallel and I was repping out 225 15-20 times. Now that I go as low as possible, that number dropped to about 10-15 reps. My max only went down 10-15 lbs, but I'd rather have a true ass-to-grass max than some half rep bullshit.

Same with me on front squats. The most I've ever done on a front squat is probably 185. I just started doing them like a year ago, but they're tricky for me...I dunno if it's balance or what, but I just can go heavy on them yet. I can back squat 315 til the cows come home, but the front squats are my kryptonite

So my manager is based out of San Jose, CA (I'm in NC). I had a meeting with him today and the first thing he says is 'I heard about your legendary performance yesterday at the Softball tourney.'
