I watched that plant based diet documentary on Netflix, so I’m pretty much an expert now. What’s up?

    You mean The Game Changers?

Where they make up bullshit to manipulate people into thinking eating meat is bad for you? And gives you less rigid nighttime erections.

    That was a awful documentary.

Aren’t most documentaries that truly to prove a point like that?

While there was definitely some stupid parts it had some good points in there as well.

I’ve seen a few good ones on the food industry. The best one I’ve seen so far is Bleeding Edge on medical devices.
But yeah none are where you want to get information from.

The only valid point they made was that you can get sufficient nutrition as an athlete being vegetarian or vegan.
The rest was literally fabricated bullshit with no scientific basis.

“Naturally, Game Changers has to dredge up the old idea that meat and dairy are bad for your heart, impairing circulation to the point that even your erections will suffer. It points to a 2012 studythat had men consume either a hamburger patty by itself or with avocado. Hours later, the hamburger-only meal resulted in constriction of the blood vessels while the burger-avocado hybrid didn’t. The researchers blamed the beef for causing inflammation, and declared the avocado to be anti-inflammatory.

Look up the study, and you’ll see right away that it was funded by the Hass Avocado Board.Of course this doesn’t invalidate the findings, but it casts suspicion over them. And equally untrustworthy are the two experiments the movie shows—one where blood is drawn from people who just ate a vegetarian or meat-filled burrito, and another where burritos are consumed and the subjects’ dicks are assessed for erection strength and frequency. Unsurprisingly, the movie shows that both experiments found that the animal-protein meal wreaked havoc and the plant-based one was healthy. But in neither case are other factors considered. Were the subjects stressed, dehydrated, under-recovered? What else had they been eating? Or smoking? Or doing that day? Rather than elaborate, Game Changerswants you to simply accept its truth: meat is bad.

Finally, on the health front, the doc again takes aim at animal foods’ alleged cancer-causing potential, naming a bevy of chemical compounds in them (TMAO, heterocyclic amines) that might hurt you. However, the science to support it just isn’t there. “The studies showing that TMAO is bad are epidemiology studies,” says Paul Saladino, MD, a functional medicine practitioner and author of the upcoming book, The Carnivore Code (carnivoremd.com). “They show that humans who have health problems have higher levels of TMAO. It doesn’t mean that TMAO caused those problems. TMAO is produced in our bodies in response to two very important compounds—carnitine and choline. Carnitine is an antioxidant, and choline is a precursor to a neurotransmitter and is in every cell in the body.” Meanwhile, Saladino says, there’s 40 times more TMAO in fish than in meat, but no one has ever accused fish of causing cancer. “TMAO is also found in plants,” he says, “but [plant-based propaganda] will never tell you this.”

Stronger by Science does a great review of the science (read: non-science) in the documentary they released last week. It was a great podcast for that reason as well as they have an interview with Michael Hull on the new science on keto diets. Its worth a listen.

There is nothing wrong with plant based diets. But there is also nothing wrong with an animal based diet either.

Let’s play a game of white light/red light.

Question for anyone with experience regarding nutrition for this meet...

    Weigh in starts at 0700
    Meet starts at 0900

I've weighed 181-182 for the last three mornings. I can weigh no more than 182.75 at weigh in to fit in the 83kg class. My plan is to not eat/drink when I get up and be at the gym by 0645 so I can weigh in right away. Then, I'll immediately eat a good "normal" preworkout meal. Probably ground beef and white rice. Something like 40P 60C 20F. That puts me 1.5ish hours from meal to lifting, which is what I always do anyway. Sound like a solid plan?

There are 30 registered lifters, and the event director said to expect the event to last 5-6 hours total. What should I do for fueling that time span? I don't think I'd want to eat an actual "meal" and get a full belly. I'm leaning toward running on whey, and simple carb snacks like granola bars, poptarts, Gatorade. Thoughts?

You're really gonna be full off a cup of rice with 4oz of meat and and apple? I would use some simple carbs, but not too simple. Even when prepping for comp on stage, we don't eat shit. I keep it to smaller meals, but whole foods. Make sure your water intake is good as well.

Just my thoughts - wait for others since I don't powerlift I could be way off :)
