Or we can encourage him to not consume enough food and look malnourished and sickly for the rest of his life. Maybe even become a runner and tear shit in his leg and back and not be able to lift weights worth a shit...... sound familiar?

You can’t tell some kid who barely eats, much less knows what to eat, to “clean bulk” at 16. He’s got youth and puberty on his side. He needs to eat at a caloric surplus and (without trying to teach a 3rd grader differential equations) that means anything and everything he can get his hands on. If he puts on a little fat then so be it. At least he’ll be building muscle while he has the test levels and recovery on his side.

This. The kid just needs to eat. He’s not buying his own food and I doubt his parents are going to be willing to pay for the amounts of chicken and fish and steak it’s going to take to get him to gain. He’s young, and obviously his metabolism is in high gear. He can handle eating calorie dense foods to try to gain - especially if he’s active and currently trying to lift. Eat more calorie dense foods, lift heavy, and stay consistent.

What weird things are you guys using as weights? Yesterday my workout included a 32 pound bag of dog food.

You guys are telling him to stuff his face and it doesn’t matter what he eats. It does matter what you eat from a health perspective, a gains perspective, and a performance perspective.

yeah kid go eat ice cream and cookies all say, see them gainz come flowing in.

Low blow on the poking fun at injuries. Would have had surgery sooner if it didnt cost me thousands. I did my best.

All gyms here are locked down, but I quit going even before. It just wasn't worth the risk for me. I take care of my grandmom, so I'm taking this seriously.

At my leanest I either ate 6 chocolate chip cookies and a glass of whole milk or 3 large scoops of French vanilla ice cream right before bed. Count the protein, fill in the rest. The days of chicken and rice for every meal are passed. Iifym is better for your every day person, and just eating enough is the best way to start for someone looking to gain weight.

If you wanna act like we don’t know anything or are all idiots then I’m coming for your throat ;)

I drove through Chic's Beach on Thursday and it was like a summer weekend with the amount of cars there. Can't say I blame em, it was like a summer weekend with the weather. Didn't bother finding parking. To be fair I could probably socially distance but didn't want to add to it.

I’m willing to bet the kid could gain some extra fat and still be ok. Do you know how much he’s going to have to eat in order to “clean bulk”? Let the kid get a base to build off of, then in the future he can work on doing it cleaner.

I feel weird when I combine my standard barbell change plates with my machined 45’s from Rogue.

So a bigger picture can be evaluated, what exactly have you eaten today so far? A big question: have you began a workout program at all?

This. Wish I would've followed that when I was in high school playing sports. Ate whatever, was in great shape and performed well only because well, I was a high schooler and had daily workouts but I didn't care because I was there to have fun with my friends. If I followed something more set in stone I could maybe not have such a hard time gaining now. I know how to run and move weights around in the gym but that's kinda it. Following this thread half the shit is totally foreign to me and I'm learning a bunch too.

I didnt act like you were all idiots. I agree with the eat more what I disagree with is it doesn’t matter what you eat.

There are plenty of skinny type II diabetics. Just because one is thin or lean doesn’t mean they are healthy.

No need to get personal over a disagreement about long term health consequences of IIFYM.

The man does have a point, if you get into the habit of eating to excess/unhealthy/everything in sight it can become an unconscious habit and those are the hardest to break. I felt that somewhat last year moving from the constantly-moving college kid lifestyle to the 40 hours 8-5 life and had to make some changes and "getting fat" is suddenly something to worry about.

Major takeaway, don't grow up. It sucks.

    Re the kid:

if you really want excess calories, drink a bunch of whole milk a day.

Eating is never as simple as just putting calories in your body. Poor food choices can establish bad habits and lead to negative outcomes even if you stay skinny. You don’t have to be fat to have shitty outcomes from cramming your mouth full of soda and salt.
There are also lots of complex social and emotional things wrapped up in food and keeping a healthy relationship with food is essential to long term success....

That said I fully agree that eating 4000kcal a day of clean foods would likely make him explode.

the right answer is probably in the middle and the 80/20 rule. 80% whole foods full of nutrients and 20% shit.

kid, your first step is to actually track what you eat. Most people who can’t put on weight over estimate how much food they eat with the reverse being true for folks who can’t lose weight.

take your time; learn to lift weights, eat lots of protein, repeat. The guys who do this successfully and long term learn to love it and make it a priority. In university I was up at 5am every day to hit the gym; which meant that getting shit faced the night before wasn’t really an option. How bad you want something can be measured by what you are prepared to give up for it.

    the rest of you:

I am working out with a bunch of bands and it is surprisingly satisfying. I will do a full body every day and I have actually gotten some pretty wicked pumps so far. Legs are hard to do tho.

I just bought one of those massage guns and have to say it is actually helping with some injuries. Anyone else have one?

The only thing I warn with the whole milk is that I took that approach and at one point damn near became lactose intolerant. I was drinking like 3 gallons a week though. A bit excessive.

Bands are the tits. I have a jigsaw with an attachment and it’s my favorite thing ever.

I been squatting my spare 35, doing modified pushups I saw on Sean Noriega’s Instagram, and doing oddball curls and shit.
