I find concurrent training hard as hell to do more than a dedicated period of time. You have to run phases or you just end up burnt out.

The guys who claim they do that shit year round use something or misrepresent what their actual day to day life is.

I have been on that schedule for almost 2 years and have lost a little over 100 lbs. On days I lift I run 2 miles to warm up get an hour of lifting then after work I do a 30 minute Hitt or yoga. Every 3 months I completely change my lifting workout and if I'm training for a run I do 5 miles on non lifting days and building miles on Saturdays taking Sunday off.

I’m with ya... I’m 46 and it gets tougher every year. I stopped running a year or so ago because my knees were starting to pay for it. Now I mostly road cycle, ride my gravel bike, and swim a few times a month. Probably never gonna do a triathlon or anything serious like that but the cycling and swimming keep me in better shape than most in our age group. 1483A750-56E9-4BA9-8D52-492C62E79613.jpg 487140A6-E90F-427D-B34E-B273A1A05586.jpg

Whats funny is I hang out with a group of ultra runners. I'm the youngest at 30, 2 are in their 40s, 3 in their 50s. I also know a bomb ass 68 year old marathoner.

Each one could whoop my ass.

@St. Swervus is older but I'm pretty sure he could whoop my ass any day of the week too. Especially in swimming. I would drown before he would get the least bit tired.

I'm looking forward to my years ahead. Hoping I can be like any of these guys. I may not be setting any FKTs in my life but I still can be a bad ass. :)

I know some ultra runners that are in their 50s and 60s but I think all of them have been runners most of their adult life. I personally have always hated distance running but it was the best way for me to get healthier. I am so jealous of those people that Make running look so easy.

My work schedule and kid schedule varies so I go with the flow. Strong yoga, cycling, long walks, touch of running, and hiking as much as possible. I'm 47 but Monday did a 25.5 mile hike with 8,600 elevation gain. That's a bit longer than my usual every other Monday journey but not by much. Ran some of it slowly just for time's sake. Best part.....no soreness afterwards. I need to get back in the pool. And agreed, bad ass bike up there. Take care.

Same thing with the guys I rode with. There are several guys in our group that are in their 60’s and on their worst day I can’t keep up with them. But, most of them have been riding for decades whereas I just started a couple of years ago.

Now not everyone in the world is going to enjoy running, and not everyone will be built for it, but most people don't like it because they don't do it right. You really have to slow down and run at a low HR and then it becomes a very enjoyable sport. Also for a lot of people it requires a very slow, gradual build up and you need to be somewhat consistent to avoid injuries, you can't be sporadic about it. For a lot of people I think that makes distance running impractical just based on their daily lives.

At the end of the day, do what you enjoy. If you don't enjoy something, you won't make it part of your life.

    That's pretty hard core dude.

I wished I lived in an area with beautiful terrain like that. We were seriously considering selling our home and moving to the rockies for 2 years. I want to be able to leave my house and within 1 hour be skiing, climbing, or running with some epic views.

I think the advantage that older folks have is they know how to slow down and not over do it. They keep their exercise at such a moderate level they can go forever. That aerobic base is how they get so good, but it's how they stay good and keep up the volume as they get older.

I'm still at the point in my life where I just want to do it all and do it all at a 110% effort level and that's just not sustainable. It's hard for my immature brain to curb the enthusiasm.

About three weeks out from Great Lake’s Strongest... I had already signed up at the beginning of the year but I totally under estimated how much I would be suffering with my newborn (3 months in now). Haven’t had more than 2 hours of consecutive sleep since, been eating unlimited carbs due to the sleep deprivation and need to cut more aggressively than usual and my training schedule has changed from 3 times a week to once every 2-3 weeks when the stars align.

Normally I wouldn’t mind showing up without my ‘A game’ but I have a target on my back for sure for winning my weight class the last 2 years. I already told myself to not be a pussy and go regardless, I think I’m just venting here

I don’t know how you guys with kids do it. I spend one night with family and my niece is up in the middle of the night screaming bloody murder and it reminds me I can’t have kids.

    More power to you guys!

It ain’t easy but you make it work with them. I’ve cut back to 3-4 training days/week because of our little one.

as for the sleep, you just get a caffeine addiction and laugh at the people that say getting sleep is easy.

And laugh at anyone without kids that say they're tired. Ever. They just can't know true weariness.
