you were probably just jacked to do the test. your resting heart rate will naturally be higher. test your heart rate when you're lying on the couch watching tv and totally relaxed, or when you first wake up in the morning. that'll be your true resting heart rate.

I read through most of this thread and many of you seem quite knowledgable. I have a couple questions about workouts. I have a pretty good base as far as lifting goes, and my cardio is okay too. Problems are I am about 270 pounds, and I want to cut down to as close to 200 as possible for I am trying to get into law enforcement.

So, my questions are how should I lift to lose that kind of weight? Should I stay with heavy lifting to put on muscle, or should I go with light weight high reps, or a mix of both? Also is doing my cardio after the lifts good or should I save cardio for a seperate day or what?

My diet was shitty, obviously being at 270, but now I am on weight watchers and I'm making some good changes. I'm not a stranger to the gym, I've just always been a lifter and not much of anything else.

    Any advice is appreciated!

Heavier the weight=more muscle fibers triggered to move weight=more calories burned=more far burned.

Personally, I stick to free weights mainly because if I curling a 55lb db, it's a true 55lbs where the machine curls are not. The machines are great to help stretch the muscle, but also lock you into movements thus more risk of an injury.

As for cardio, fasted (empty stomach) is always key as your glycogen levels are depleted so, it attacks the fat. Post workout will do the same just be careful as it can then turn carbolic (burn muscle)

Diet is key. If your diet is shit then you lack the self discipline to make these goals of yours happen.

Diet has certainly gotten better, and needs to keep improving daily. I usually hit free weights, just wondering if going lighter for more reps will help me get lighter

Complete myth sir. It doesn't make any sense. Heavier weights will help.

Think about it...assuming you can lift heavier then why not? What will lifting light do for u?
When I train quads, I have to place my feet rather wide and go lighter on the weight due to a nagging knee injury. Other than that, heavy as possible with strict form

    Sean's absolutely right.

You'll need a mix of cardio and weights, but you need to go heavy enough with the weights so that you're hitting out no more than 12 reps before failure. If you can do more than 12 with strict form, you need to go heavier.

The muscle mass you have / build will only help you burn more fat.

If you want a program to follow, why not do Kris Gethin's 12-week Cutting the Fat program? Just go to bodybuilding.com , click on "Find a Plan", click on "Fat Loss", and you're there.

Tons of information regarding training, diet, and supplements to achieve your goal.

    DO IT!!

Thanks for the info guys. It does make sense to stay with heavy weights, I just hear so many mixed things I'm not sure what to do any more. I've always heard guys saying if you want to get lighter lift lighter like a runner, but I'm going to stay heavier for building more muscle.

"lift like a runner" ya, because they burn muscle more then they do fat. Muscle weighs more than fat. A lot of runners have that 'skinny fat' look to them. U know-they look skinny but are fat at the same time. And remember I started off @215 so IT IS possible.
    One last thing....

You might want to look into 17 day diet. It is a good way to eat clean and break away from bad eating habits. My wife and I lost over 20lbs. Key to diet is drinking lots of water. I have been weight training/ body building for 25+ years. Training is only a small part of a fitness lifestyle. Think about it, one to two hours in the gym, what you do the other 22 - 23 hours is what is key. Goodluck, Kimo

I have been doing weight watchers since last friday. Staying within my allotted points for the day, and over all eating much less and much heathier than I was. I'm going to stay with weight watchers until my appointment I have coming up with a nutritionist. . This is why I was looking for work out advice, because I was gettin mixed reviews on going light with my lifting to lose weight or to stay with the heavier strength training. .

I am only supposed to weigh myself on fridays, but I cheated and weighed myself earlier this evening. On this past friday I was at exactly 270. Today I was at 264. I started following weight watchers friday, and worked out friday, saturday, took sunday off, and started the twelve week fat loss program on monday. 6 pounds already! .. .I know its going to stop dropping that fast really soon though. O well, just got to stick with it.
