No rest, especially for a beginner, will burn you out in a hurry. Its an option, but I personally wouldn't suggest it.

I plan on having rest no matter what. I work 50+ hours a week and go to school. It's gonna be hard enough to find time get to the gym but it will happen.

I use to lift often but tore something in my wrist reracking a dumbbell incorrectly about 5 months ago, it recently healed up to lifting condition now. I've lost all my old workout plans and routines and would like some ideas. I want to tone up but not to the point that I'm losing mass so I guess a mixture of toning/gaining. So if anyone could make me a nice routine and pm it to me that'll be great! Thanks

Too much cardio will have you gaining fat and burning muscle...try cardio first thing in the morning before you eat, try not to spend any longer then 30 min on the tread mill. Get your diet in check, figure out the amount of calories you need to gain, maintain or lose. Keep in mind:

    1 gram of fat=9 cal
    1 gram of protein=4 cal
    1 gram of carbs=4 cal

Figure a diet that has most of your calories coming from carbs and protein, and get your fat from olive oil, flaxseeds, mixed nuts, etc. The 3 day lifting, 3 day cardio program is great advice!!! Thats kinda what I do, but right now I'm not really concerned so much about cardio being as I'm below 9% BF. Like stated before, Don't fall for the "gotta skinny before I can get big" myth!!! Get fucking big then get ripped! The more muscle you put on with the right kinds of food and dieting the more fat you'll burn!

Also keep in mind, WE ARE ALL DIFFERENT! What works for me may not work for you guys, experiment around with food, diets, carb/protein/fat ratio's, workout plans etc. Once you find your niche, stick to it, perfect it and you'll be golden. Pick up a copy of Muscle and Fitness, browse the supersite section of bodybuilding.com, talk to a friend you know at your gym...get someone to push you and stay at it!

Remember diet+exercise=results, also on that note, the results don't come over night. I'm sure there is a time in everyone's life where they wanna change, mine was at USCG Boarding Team School, I failed my fitness test by 10-12 sit ups. I got kicked out. Cost the Coast Guard some serious cash. Have I failed a fitness test since? FUCK NO! That was my turning point, Aug 2006. 4 years later I've got the body I want, I've quit smoking, I feel great, and I finally beat my dad at something! lol 275 max squat for 5 reps, he's only at 255! They say habits take 28 or more days to make, most people's New Years resolutions for fitness last less then 21 days...don't be that person! Find a role model, watch movie's with him/her in it, research their diets, workouts, etc. Push yourself to be like that person! Trust me it works.
