I'm hooked now after looking at all these pictures. My wife wants a camera and I'm going to buy her one now just not sure of what to get. Any suggestions?

I would venture a first camera should be a relatively inexpensive camera(anything within the $200-$400 range should suffice). I would also recommend getting a point and shoot camera as these are small, portable, and very user friendly. jumping feet first into a dslr, or any interchangeable lens system camera can get overwhelming and the user will tend to just use it at the capacity a point and shoot would suffice.

that said, my recommendation is get a point and shoot camera, first. learn composition, and if you start to enjoy it, and start to "grow out of the potential of your point and shoot", then that would be a good time to look into something else. on the other hand, if you don't pick it up, that initial investment is not lost in a point and shoot camera vs a dslr/interchangeable lens camera.

for some, it is a lifestyle, hobby, job, so photography is almost like the back of their hand, second nature.

for others, it's only because it is a "special occasion", or they want that "look" of holding a bigger camera, and becomes a hassle to lug out the camera where ever they go.

How are you liking that x100s? I am trying to decide on the Fuji or the Oly OMD with the 17mm f1.8. Looking for a good small camera to use everyday. Lugging around a 60d with the 17-55mm gets heavy fast.

what are you shooting? night sky? action shots? regular shots?

if shooting regular and not needing the buffer(from shooting an action shot sequence) in your camera, raw would be better for post.

if you have a circular polarizer, bring it for the day shots.

    what glass do you have?

since you do not know your camera yet, I would suggest aperture priority, and have your auto iso set to kick in at 1/100s(depending on what glass you have). this setting would trump "program"(a la "p" is for professional). adjust your exposure with the exposure compensation button

I'm really leaning towards the x100s but can't find them in stock any where.

(regarding the x100s) is there a hotshoe? or an easy way to use an external flash? there's no way i'm buying a camera like that ($$) without one - I can't tell. I've been playing with a G15 lately for a more portable camera.

I love photography but have no clue of the technical details of the cameras, Anybody have a good recommendation for someone starting out? Nikon D40?
