Just picked up my first DSLR today, so looks like I have another thread to frequent.

I've got a lot to learn, but here are a couple trying to figure it out.

Ben: I heard back from my TA, he agrees with mallard/domestic hybrid. He also said that it probably is a resident if it is near a park.
You are right on the snow goose, too!
I really need to get out to shoot some birds now...

Spent the day watching surfers tear it up. Who knew the day after New Years Day in New Zealand is a National holiday? Good for me. Let me know what you think

Thanks! I plan on going crazy with it taking all kinds of photos.
I picked up a T3i kit w 18-55mm and a 50mm f/1.8. Any tips on maximizing the DSLR on that model?

I picked up a book called Understanding Exposure by Bryan Peterson. Its pretty basic, but as a newb it taught me a ton.

I wished I gone that route- I have a 1st gen 400mm f/2.8 and hand holding that is damn near impossible to get a keeper. Traveling with it and a tripod internationally makes it even harder. For the $- that 400mm 5.6 cannot be beat and has been used by pros for years

Seeing that snow reminded me of a shot I took in UT during the fall.

First shots look nice, man! For starters just figure out Aperture priority mode for affecting your depth of field (what's in focus and what isn't) and then Shutter priority mode for affecting things in motion (freezing motion or showing blur). That way you're learning something you can apply right away and it's more fun (and you won't be stuck in Auto mode for too long). Read up on those two and some tips on composition and you'll be off to a great start! glad you finally got a camera!

Yeah it's either a ross's or snow goose, and you're right about the black grin patch. The identifying mark I used for this one was the shape of the base of the bill where it meets the feathers. Ross's geese have a pretty much straight line while on Snow geese the line has a curve into the bill. The pictures you posted look like it has the curve instead of the straight line to me, but that could just be the photograph angle, of course.
    Seriously...I'll get one up!

So what would you recommend? I just really want a good zoom lens that isn't crazy expensive.

Nope. No camera stores around here. Except walmart, but that's walmart. lol. My only worry with that is the fact that the higher the zoom, the more the picture loses it's quality. Especially 300.

I posted it as an edit to my previous comment, but that must've been after you multiquoted. Regardless, here it is again: http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/sports-hobbies-interests/309181-birding-bird-photography.html :)
And nice work with the new species! I need to start making a list for this year. Not a full on big year, but it'll be neat to be able to recall everything that I saw over the year.
