She had to compose herself after her 4-year-old son explained to her why he thinks soldiers are "bad." To the little boy, the fact that soldiers carry guns means they're villains. Since young children lack the capacity to understand such complex issues, and the fact that our kids are bombarded with messages from television and schools that seem to equate guns with evil, it's easy to see why he might think this way.
So what then is the excuse for liberals who feel the same way about gun ownership? The Second Amendment makes it clear that keeping and bearing arms is a right that should not be infringed. The writings of our founding fathers confirm they intended for America to be a nation of armed people. Richard Henry Lee, President of the Continental Congress and signer of the Declaration of Independence, said, "To preserve liberty it is essential that the whole body of people always possess arms and be taught alike, especially when young, how to use them." Yet, 220 years later, we have hundreds, if not thousands, of federal, state, and local restrictions put on firearms and those who own them.
Prior to MacDonald v Chicago, the Second Amendment supposedly applied only to the federal government, leaving state and local governments to restrict firearm usage as they wish. But the aforementioned Supreme Court case finally affirmed the Second Amendment applies to the states, as well. Now the case can be made against state gun control laws, and inevitably those lawsuits will begin. After all, even states that allow the concealed carry of guns restrict who can carry and to what types of places a gun owner can carry a firearm. Since February 26, 2004, Missouri has allowed the concealed carry of firearms; however, there are many prerequisites for the permit--one must be 23, complete a background check, safety training, and weapons can only be carried in certain places. Of course, criminals carry guns wherever they want, at any age with no background check.

Further, in spite of the fact the federal government was never allowed to infringe upon the Second Amendment, the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act, among others, does just that by instituting waiting periods and criminal background checks when guns are purchased at a firearm store. What is never acknowledged by gun control advocates is that criminals don't buy their guns at a gun store.
So, are you smarter than a 4-year-old?
The Second Amendment is the only gun law needed--anything more is a restriction on the rights of Americans, a restriction that does nothing to protect anyone. The Virginia Tech shooter was not concerned that the campus did not allow concealed weapons. And since law-abiding citizens obey laws, none of the victims had the ability to protect themselves.
Liberals embrace one "reasonable" gun law after another and will continue to do so until the Second Amendment is essentially meaningless, rendering people helpless against the government and criminals. And they do so under the guise that it protects the public-an idea that is easy to embrace if you've never taken 10 minutes to consider the issue. If we are unable to defend ourselves, we cannot preserve the Second Amendment or any of our other rights. Is that the plan, or can liberals just not think beyond the level of a 4-year-old?
